The full extent of the casualties was still unclear and the situation was very dynamic, police spokesman Markus Wessner told NBC News.

Wessner said all available rescue teams in the region were deployed to the crash site, while local police said on Twitter that "several hundred" rescue personnel were on the ground.

The trains collided around 7 a.m. (1 a.m. ET) on a section of track between the southern cities of Rosenheim and Bad Aibling.

One of the trains detailed in the incident, according to Wessner. It was not immediately clear what caused the collision.

Germany's Justice Minister Heiko Maas thanked rescue teams in a message posted on Twitter.

SMRT is looking pretty good now. While the trains may break down occasionally, we never once had a case of trains colliding into one another. That is thanks to PAP's good leadership and its meritocracy model.

First MRT accident

A front-to-back collision between two trains at the Clementi Station on 5 August 1993 was the first major accident on the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system since it started operation in 1987. This first MRT accident resulted in 156 injured commuters.

Description
At 7:50 am on 5 August 1993, an East-bound train from Jurong stopped at the Clementi Station for*two minutes longer than scheduled due to a technical fault. It was then hit by another train. Operations at the*three affected stations, namely, Clementi, Buona Vista and Commonwealth resumed within a day after intensive checks were carried out by Mass Rapid Transit Corporation (MRTC) engineers to ensure that the tracks, signals, power and other installations were functioning properly.

The train, comprising*six carriages, had a full capacity of 1,800 passengers. The peak-hour collision injured 156 commuters. Several passengers were flung against panels and steel railings of the train or piled on top of one another, suffering multiple injuries.

There was a mystery human body part found in that accident MRT train - an unclaimed finger! No cases in official hospital admission has any lost finger.

Blooded photo of figer was posted by netizens in cell phone picture.

The guess is illegal immigrant or wanted person or over-stayer had lost the finger, fled the scene, hidding detection.
