The borders make a difference only when borders are respected. Borders are artificial. They change with the times. Very often they need to be defended and when this fails, borders change overnight.

That was true 50 years ago, but it is no longer a hellhole but a paradise if you know where to go. I have spent the last 25 years exploring various cities in different provinces and have shortlisted and rank the best places to live in taking into account my own needs and passions. Some places are still terrible but china is such a big country and there are several pockets of very decent places which I have earmarked in the last 25 years of living there.

Ok, I started to work in hongkong and travelled every month to shenzhen in 1991, staying for a few days each time and I discovered many things, some bad, some good.

Borders only means something to ordinary civilians who cross border through proper channels with the right papers.

Borders mean nothing to hordes of illegal immigrants. Just look at the wave of Arabs and Muslims swarming into Europe through Greece, Hungary and Croatia. They are only making use of the Chinese diaspora to project their power overseas.
