MediaTek Q2 net profit falls to 9-quarter low

Taipei, July 31 (CNA) MediaTek Inc. (聯發科), one of Taiwan's leading integrated circuit designers, saw its net profit for the second quarter of this year falling to a nine-quarter low due to the slow season effect.

In an investor conference held Friday, MediaTek reported NT$6.38 billion (US$203 million) in net profit in the second quarter, down 12.1 percent from a quarter earlier, with earnings per share (EPS) of NT$4.06, compared with NT$4.62 recorded in the first quarter.

Market analysts said that during a product transition period, which slowed demand in the second quarter, MediaTek's consolidated sales for the April-June period fell 1 percent from a quarter earlier to US$47.04 billion. Even worse, the analysts said, price competition has hurt the IC designer's gross margin, which fell 1.4 percentage points to 45.9 percent.

Looking ahead, MediaTek Vice Chairman and President Hsieh Ching-jiang (謝清江) said the company is expected to feel the pinch of the weaker-than-expected global demand in the third quarter.

Hsieh said that fierce competition in the global handheld device market could further compromise the IC designer's chip shipments in the July-September period.

The MediaTek executive said that the IC designer's consolidated sales could range between NT$51.7 billion and NT$55.5 billion, up 10-18 percent from a quarter earlier. The forecast was about 20 percent lower than market expectations.

Hsieh said that MediaTek's gross margin for the third quarter is expected to range between 42.5 percent and 45.5 percent.

With Mediatek becoming more cautious about the global market climate, Hsieh said that the IC designer's consolidated sales for the whole of 2015 are expected to fall 5-10 percent from a year earlier, adding that its gross margin is expected to face further risks in the second half of this year.

Hsieh said that MediaTek has lowered its forecast for 2015's smartphone chip shipments to 400 million units from a previous estimate of 450 million units, while also cutting its estimate for chips used in tablet computers by 10 percent to 45 million units for this year.

He said that MediaTek is expected to ship a total of 150 million long term evolution (LTE) chips this year to take a 20 percent share of the global LTE chip market.

In terms of its efforts in advanced technology development, Hsieh said, MediaTek is scheduled to launch commercial production of chips made on the 20 nanometer process at the end of this year, and to kick off mass production of chips made on the 16nm process in the first half of next year.

MediaTek July sales hit 4-month high

2015/08/07 20:04:27

Taipei, Aug. 7 (CNA) MediaTek Inc. (聯發科), one of Taiwan's leading integrated circuit designers, said Friday that its sales for July hit a high in four months on the back of peak season effects.

Market analysts said that with the global IC industry entering a traditional peak season in the third quarter, the impact resulting from weakening global demand has been offset to some extent.

In July, MediaTek posted NT$17.91 billion (US$564 million) in consolidated sales, up 7.8 percent from a month earlier as buyers started to build up inventories during the peak season. The July figure, however, fell 7.05 percent from a year earlier.

In the first seven months of this year, MediaTek's consolidated sales fell 5.79 percent from a year earlier to NT$112.49 billion. The year-on-year drop was evidence that global demand for smartphones has been on the decline.

Smartphone chips serve as the largest sales source for MediaTek, accounting for more than 60 percent of its total revenue.

Shares of MediaTek outperformed the broader market, moving up 1.09 percent to close at NT$278.00 Friday in the wake of a four-month high in its July sales. The weighted index on the Taiwan Stock Exchange ended down 0.08 percent at 8,442.29 points.

In an investor conference held on July 31, MediaTek said that its consolidated sales for the third quarter could range between NT$51.7 billion and NT$55.5 billion, up 10-18 percent from the second quarter. Analysts said that based on the sales guidance, MediaTek could rake in higher revenue in August and September, compared with July's numbers.

Still, the third quarter sales forecast was about 20 percent lower than an earlier market estimate. The market had previously anticipated a higher sequential increase in sales for the July-September period by taking peak season effects into account.

MediaTek shares had been hit hard by the lower-than-expected third quarter guidance in the following sessions after the release of the sales forecast. In the first three trading sessions of this month, the stock shed about 16 percent before rebounding.

Weakening global demand has prompted MediaTek to cut its forecast of smartphone chip shipments to 400 million units from 450 million units for 2015.

The IC designer expects that its sales for 2015 will fall 5-10 percent from a year earlier.
