Japanese was able to fight off the evil Brit to contain the opium trades in the later 1800s and early 1900s in Japan that see Japan industrialization raised rapidly to catch up with the Pommie Americans in the early 1900s. Whereas China and SEA region and Singapore fell badly to the cruel evil Brit relentlessly attack to destroy Chinese with opium. The Brit was finding hard currency to fund their British Empire expansion with drug money at the expense of China and SEA Singapore region.

A weak China of drug addicts nation become easy target for any country, or Japan, to attack and run over.

After WW2, though Japan surrendered but it has gained enough industrialized technologies knowhow from the West to raise again in a short period of time. For China and SEA Chinese they are still fighting to eradicate opium from the Brit monopoly of opium trade till late 1945.

Do we or shall we want to bring up this dark days of China and SEA Singapore with the evil British today?

This dark and evil history of the evil Brit wished it did not exist and want to siam their shameless history against the Chinese.

The Japanese Opium Experience
Japan was, as far as I know, the only colonial power to execute faithfully the principles of opium suppression set forth at the Hague Convention in 1912, for Japan had been fighting opium addiction, at home and in her colonies, for decades. Japan persistently argued that drug trafficking was not only immoral but, in the long run, unprofitable.

One of Japan’s top priorities after taking Taiwan in 1895 was to end opium use. European smugglers were impotent against the Japanese’ efficient police organization and tight surveillance and investigation. Opium-related deaths in Taiwan plummeted from 215,476 in 1908 to 38,000 annually by 1923. Japan also suppressed opium smuggling into Korea.

At the Second Opium Conference, Mr. Sugimura of Japan complained that it “was beneath a nation’s dignity to derive so much revenue from opium,” and he urged Western powers to view the problem not just from a humanitarian viewpoint but from an economic one, noting that in Taiwan,
“Even from the economic and financial point of view, a sacrifice of revenue from opium was in reality a gain, since the productive power of the nation increased.”

Britain protested Japan’s attacks on ‘the justice and fairness of the British government,” but the Polish delegate agreed with the Japanese. He said that because of the smokescreen of rhetoric clouding Western opium monopolies, the world was further from eliminating opium in 1924 than it had been in 1913.

Lord Cecil finally dismissed mounting criticism by arguing that opium was “purely an Indian question…it does not appear to me to be a matter for international interference at all.”

Britain clung to her Hong Kong opium monopoly right up until 1945, when postwar profits no longer justified the embarrassment.

nonsense

japanese abandon chinese new year, add english word in their language and look towards the west and learn from their science and technology.
before that time, japanese language full of chinese character, when they know the chinese is in decline and west advance, they switch from china to the west.
that why they beat china.

not because of opium.

that is crazy.

Japan is merely the creation of Tang dynasty, the golden age of China and one of the greatest civilisation on earth, the epitome of art, culture, science, innovation, education and trade and commerce,a true cosmopolitan city that shared connections between empires, the Persians, the ,the egpytians, the africans.the Europeans(or barbarians) the Japanese.with a population of 2 million, such a populous city was never seen again in history till the modern age.foreginers was embraced and foreign influence from all over the world could be seen in tang culture.all religions was tolerated in the civilisation and slavery was almost non existent.

Everthing Japan is and the greatness of their culture was a creation of Tang dynasty, what we once had and what we could have been,of a age in time gone by.

Opium was a symptom, and not the cause of China's decline against western colonial powers.

When the europeans came to the far east, China was at the peak of Qing dynasty. Angmors bowed to Qianlong. On the flipside, Japan was still the backward kingdom of marauding pirates. This was the starting point for both countries.

The real game changer was the decisions taken when they faced aliens at their doorstep. Japan chose to modernise and embarked on the road to Industralisation; China stuck to its traditional ways of centralised, top-down rule.

China's tea and porcelain was making a killing in the global commodities market. When the europeans ran out of gold (robbed from the americas), they made silver the next currency. The southern chinese cities were also difficult to be managed out of the northern capital. Very soon, the europeans saw this opening and started trading directly with the southern cities. Then one day Lin Zhexu (also a controversial figure who is not the anti-opium "hero" made out to be) seized and destroyed all British inventory.. and that triggered a chain of events we know very well...

There is no way China could have stayed unharmed when there were many hungry wolves at its doorstep. Japan, however, had nothing to lose by re-inventing itself when the opportunity came along.

Everthing Japan is and the greatness of their culture was a creation of Tang dynasty, what we once had and what we could have been,of a age in time gone by.

The Egyptian empire was the cradle of civilisation. The Mayan and Aztec were one of the first to engineer underground sewage systems Look at the lot of them now.

Glorious civilisations will always rise and fall. That's the rule of nature. However, China has bucked that trend and re-emerged several times from dynastic ruin. My money is on them (us).

I am looking this British industrial evolution that could produced opium products in mass production that has never been seen before at that time. With industrial technology which was manufacturing of mass production that could dive the price of opium down that other Westerners could not compete with the Brit.

Mass produced manufacturing required a big consumer market and where else can you find huge mass population consumers than the East.

Drug money is easy money that even today many will do it despite death penalty if caught. The Brit went ahead despite to illegal smuggled drug to China and later monopolized the trade going to war with China in 1938.

Later the Brit turned to their own Subjects (Singaporeans were known as British Subjects) to consumed opium. Today PAP stopped you from getting your CPF money @55 and they can go it because they are the government. Same goes to the Brit they are the government (colonial) and you cannot stop them to be your drug Lord.

The Jap did stop the Brit drug invasion to Jap and that makes the different in 1900s period between Chinese and the Jap. Jap have acquired Western technologies and open door to the West but with Brit opium at their doorstep the Jap would not be what they are today and would be even worse than China. A drugged nation Jap would be colonized by the Brit easily.

Overtime the Chinese will learn to expand to absorb Brit products in 1800-1945 but with Brit drugging the Chinese how could China rise in this time? Fighting the illegalized legalized drug trade from the Brit will exhaust China financially and sent the Chinese to hell.

If China was not drugged China would be the one can stop WW1 and WW2 or join the war to get rid of German for the Brit, after acquiring the Brit technology.

Roll forward today China has acquired Western technologies and become world no.1 economy and did it with their sweat and hard earned money, no drug money. So you think China would not open up to the West? It is just a matter of time Chinese will open but the drug trade sent Chinese to hell.

In a short time the Chinese produced more opium than the Brit East India Company sending the opium price down to save their own country.
China would also join the opium trade later using the Silk Roads to the West to flood opium in the Middle East and Europe, can they? Or even grow opium neat Turkey to flood the Western market right up to the doorstep of the evil Pommies England. Drug money is easy money who is not interested in?

Having problems with the Brit open drug trade at the China doorstep send Chinese to become poor peasant nation unable to raise again unless going more wars with the Westerners and this is where 八国联军 against China sending China brankrupt in the 1900s paying damage of 60M pound sterling to these countries.

Fighting Fire With Fire
China reluctantly decided to destroy the Western opium trade by flooding the market with domestic opium. It was a painful decision, for Chinese rulers held that production of opium, for any reason, would “provoke the judgment of Heaven and the condemnation of men.”
It certainly provoked Britain’s condemnation, which resented China’s infringement upon her private opium monopoly. By 1876, China was earning over 1.5 million annually from opium, but Sir R. Alcock told the House of Commons that China would gladly abandon the trade if Britain stopped her own trafficking.

Opium products itself dated back this far.

c.3400 B.C.
The opium poppy is cultivated in lower Mesopotamia. The Sumerians refer to it as Hul Gil, the 'joy plant.' The Sumerians would soon pass along the plant and its euphoric effects to the Assyrians. The art of opium poppy-culling would continue from the Assyrians to the Babylonians who in turn would pass their knowledge onto the Egyptians.

•c.1300 B.C.
In the capital city of Thebes, Egyptians begin cultivation of opium thebaicum, grown in their famous poppy fields. The opium trade flourishes during the reign of Thutmose IV, Akhenaton and King Tutankhamen. The trade route included the Phoenicians and Minoans who move the profitable item across the Mediterranean Sea into Greece, Carthage, and Europe

I am linking this thread to industrialized revolution of the Brit where never in the history of man kind that products can be produced /manufactured on a massive scale using equipment and machines before the revolution.

With large volume produced you have to find large consumers base and wealthy consumers to buy opium. China Chinese become a good target market for the Brit to make drug money.

It become less important for the Brit to sell their industrialized technology products to China whereas drug money are more important for the Brit to make and financed their own Brit companies, set up technology universities/ institutions to further their technological advancement.

I am looking at a different angle on this opium trade to link to drug money to finance British Empire expansion stretching from America, Canada, South Africa and Australia expansion. These expansions required millions if not billion dollars and where do they find cheap money to finance this Empire occupy 1/3 of the world with 450 million population under them.

Until into the 1925s they Brit still stick to the opium trade despite they know opium destroy families and nations and target Asian Chinese and SEA Oversea Chinese, your forefathers 华侨人。Overseas Chinese in Malaysia/ SEA regions were wealthy people trading in this region for hundreds of years before the Brit arrival.

New Markets
As China tightened her borders, Britain pinned her hopes on her other Asian colonies. Opium production in the Straits Settlements (Singapore, Penang, Malacca, Labuan) rose from 353,938 pounds in 1916 to 370,688 pounds in 1920, in spite of Britain’s promise at the Hague Convention to limit opium sales. In 1918, 60% of Britain’s Asian income was derived from opium sales. In 1925, opium accounted for 48% of Singapore’s revenue, and 100% of North Borneo’s. At the 1923 Opium Conference, Mr. Campbell admitted that the British Indian government was determined to maintain high levels of both internal consumption and export, and that they,

Opium trade under the Chinese Communist Party was important to its finances in the 1940s.[67] Peter Vladimirov's diary provided a first hand account.[68] Chen Yung-Fa provided a detailed historical account of how the opium trade was essential to the economy of Yan'an during this period.[69] Mitsubishi and Mitsui were involved in the opium trade during the Japanese occupation of China.[70]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opium#Recreational_use_in_China

those wicked Communists not only refused to fight the Japanese invaders but also conducted the opium trade to poison their fellow Chinese people. according to Peter Vladimirov's diary. if I remember correctly. the Communists grew vast amounts of opium in their territory and sold them to the Japanese who sold the opium to the Chinese people in Japanese occupied China. the Japanese's opium revenues funded the ongoing war against the Nationalist forces in China then.

it is said during the war, the Communists secretly traded with Yan Xishan without Chiang Kai Shek's knowledge. the Communists were especially interested in acquiring from Yan very large quantities of cotton. they needed so much cotton for what ? was cotton related to the growth of opium or weapons production then ?

If China does not fight fire with fire growing opium to counter the Evil Brit opium trade CHina will not be China as today. Chinese are warlords and will never concede defeat to a small islanders Brit monopolizing the opium trade in huge quantities at China door step.

This unstoppable trade were hard to eradicate and as long there are Brit at China doorstep China will joined in the opium trade to destablised the Brit monopoly in this region down to SEA Singapore.

according to historian Xin Haonian who verified the Chinese Communist Party's opium story from Taiwanese sources and Peter Vladimirov who spent 4 years in Yan’an as the Soviet official highest representative to CCP during ww2. the Eight Route Army’s 359th Brigade and He Long’s 120th Divison were actively involved in the growth and sale of vast amounts of opium then. according to Peter Vladimirov, they sold the opium everywhere in China: CCP, KMT and Japanese territories. Mao Zedong told Vladimirov that it was not honorable to sell opium but the CCP had no choice but to do that. they used the highly profitable opium’s revenues to purchase weapons from the KMT and then they used those weapons to destroy the KMT.
