I think the following is a fantastic idea, not all people will agree to wear black on Sunday depending upon their interpretation of what wearing black means but all can meaningfully celebrate the life of a nation building father by flying the Singapore flag proudly as if it were National Day.

Cannot wait for the remembering LKY Facebook page to say it is okay...

LKY I think will say this good suggestion= okay, no need so much debate (should have been allowed since Monday, and for 1 month after 23March), now just get admin to announce it...

Minister Lim Swee Say, in his capacity as grassroots advisor, says the move greatly resonated with him and promised to work with the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth to make it happen should it be approved.
SINGAPORE: A group of 50 young residents and grassroots leaders from East Coast GRC is hoping that Singaporeans will be allowed to display the National Flag on Sunday (Mar 29) - the day of Mr Lee Kuan Yew's State Funeral.

They are seeking Government support, namely through the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY), to not only greenlight the initiative, but to support the move across the island.

According to the National Heritage Board, the National Flag can only be flown throughout the year when raised on a flagpole. These rules are relaxed only during the month of August, when National Day is held.

Led by six grassroots leaders - Asst Prof Yusuf Ali; Leong Yi Xing; Nicole Leong; Nurul Uzla Abdullah; Nicholas Sim; and Sussie Ketit - they proposed the idea to their grassroots leader and Minister in the Prime Minister's Office Lim Swee Say. They told Mr Lim that they believe that displaying the National Flag on Sunday could be a way of showing confidence for Singapore's future during this period of grief.

Asst Prof Yusuf said the idea came about from the availability of flags flown on National Day by the public, saying they might be able to reach out to at least 70 per cent of the population despite the tight timeframe.

"A lot of people say this is a time for grief," he said. "But at the same time grief and confidence are not mutually exclusive. You can express grief and, at the same time, express confidence in the future. Confidence that we have what it takes as a people to really punch above our weight and carry on the legacy that has been around for the last 50 years."

"This is a symbolic moment. What better way to display confidence than all of us being patriotic, displaying what we feel most proud about - Singapore," he added.

Speaking in his capacity as a grassroots advisor, Mr Lim said the move greatly resonated with him. He added that he would work with MCCY on the move, should the initiative be approved.

"I thought that it was one of the best ways to bid farewell to Mr Lee," he said. "To thank him and assure him that Singaporeans will work together in unity and confidence to ensure that Singapore, in SG100, would be a better place than SG50, building on his legacy."

MCCY has been reached for comment.

A flag is a symbol and I leave the symbols for the symbol-minded.

To mark the event they should sacrifice a virgin or many of the old maids out there

PAP is really going overboard on this.

given the current PAP team driven by passion for obscene & insatiable greed for profits, no surprises if commemorative coins, LKY Memorabilia, DVD of his legacies, curerent lying-in-state funeral procession etc are available for public purchase eventually. what do profits go to ? LHL pockets likely, patent LKY branding, collect royalties for eons to come

So why did they complain about PAP crony George Quek making limited edition LKY buns? I thought that was a kind gesture done in good taste.
