Lorry driver gets 2 weeks' jail and 5-year driving ban for causing pedestrian's death

SINGAPORE - A driver of a lorry was jailed for two weeks and banned from driving for five years on Thursday for causing a pedestrian's death in a road traffic accident.

Chinese national Hou Xiaohai, 34, admitted to causing Ms Ang Soo Lan's death by failing to keep a proper lookout when making a right turn from Whampoa Road into Whampoa Drive at about 1.20pm on April 25 this year.

The 55-year-old died a day later in hospital from head injuries.

A district court heard that Hou was driving the lorry along the road, heading to Block 86 in Whampoa Drive to deliver furniture, when he stopped at the traffic junction.

He probably didnt even have to serve after the sentencing if he had been remanded awaiting hearing.

Cannot punish too harshly, he's a valuable FT. He'll be driving a lorry again in five years' time.
