If the door hinge/ floor hinge and the frame cannot stand for the weight of 4-years old boy and the wing force, I could say it material and built method were not up to the acceptable standards.
To prevent the over-swing or beyond the allowable angle of the floor hinge, the builder should fit the door stopper at appropriate point.

Look at the video, you know it is catastrophic hinge failure. For the weight and size the ceiling hinge should be stronger and better attached. Glass is far denser than wood and with big wooden doors the floor and ceiling hinges are freaking big. We have a fly by night group of fuckers doing this slipshod work through the island. Actually, a large wind can bring down the glass door.

Glass is brittle. It will shatter easily if a "point" force hit it. So a door stopper will cause a "point force" when a swinging glass door hit it and the chance of shattering is great.

If you watch the video carefully, the boy was holding to the long vertical handle bar of the door, pushing and running with it. Therefore, actually it is the handle bar on the other side of the door that hit the wall, not the glass. The glass itself did not hit anything. The impact was transmitted from the handle to the glass at the part where the handle is fastened to the glass. This transmitted force caused the door to shatter. Upon shattering, the glass pieces were held together by the "plastic" lamination (such glass panel is actually made up of 2 or more thin sheets of glass held together by special "plastic" sheet). The shattered glass door becomes flexible, folded and drop down. Glass cannot take point impact force, which is why windscreen can shatter if hit by a small stone. The best way to prevent the shattered glass panel from dropping down is to provide a metal frame around it like the good old glass doors of the past. Otherwise, no frameless door can withstand abuse like what had happened.

Yeah it is clearly the boy's fault. Keep banging glass door like that sure damage it. It is basically vandalism, not poor quality. Except it cause the boy to be hurt in the process of his vandalism.

There is a case man! Can sue Temasek Mapletree for failure in building maintenance. A four years old boy got strength to pull down a door?

The door must be flimsy installed!!

Exactly, it is the case.
The door cannot withstand the child weight and his swing force:*:

What do you expect when everything is done based on the lowest quote with specs written by the engineer hired based on the lowest salary.

Aesthetics do play a big part in modern building including fixtures and furniture. The World cannot cater for a minority of irresponsible and inconsiderate individuals. The parents allowed the kid to go too far and it gave way.

We do ourselves a great disfavour if we cater for these minorities. They would not learn and things will be a lot more expensive. It will cost a fortune to make things idiot proof.

The mall should sue the parents and make it public. Others should learn from this. For all you know, it might save some kids life in the future.

building specs written by architects, the fees are stipulated by Singapore Institute of Architects but client and architect may agree to different fee scale

At procurement level, engineers do the actual process.

Resident architect, resident engineer and clerk of work (COW) play the role in defining the quality of materials and works at site.
You are absolutely right to say it is shoddy work or the design failure.

Absolutely right.
Our buildings should be strong enough for kids to play around.
In fact, when I was a kid, I played like that on window and door panels.
Quite fun at all.

Anyone remember the case(s) of windows falling out of the HDB units:confused:
It was because they decided to use cheaper aluminum which was weaker. As a result people had to spend $$$ to fix the problem.

Is lemon laws already in effect?
If it is, shall we use it against Gov. entities and stat. boards for their failures?

either "cheaper" or more expensive aluminum will still corrode. stainless steel is more reliable for screw and bolt assemblies on windows.

At procurement level, contractor's or supplier's PE (Professional Engineer) certifies that the product (supplied according to architect's spec) comply with prevailing regulations

the term COW was not in use for many years now as they thought their status was reduced to those of Bovinae subfamily. They are now call RTO, Resident Technical Officer

Westgate mall boosts safety after glass door falls on boy
Published on Aug 10, 2014 6:39 AM

The management of a shopping mall where a glass door fell on a young boy late last week said it has taken steps to prevent such an accident from happening again.

The four-year-old had been swinging and pushing the 3m-tall door on the fifth floor of Jurong's Westgate mall when it got over-extended, causing it to dislodge from its hinges and fall on him.

Though it did not fully shatter, he was trapped underneath the door and suffered cuts and neck pain.

The mall's manager Eddie Lim told The Sunday Times yesterday that the boy was recovering well and the glass door would be replaced with one with a metal frame around it, which its predecessor did not have.
