A 78 years old grandma sleeping at TTSH Ward Corridor for 2 night straight

My 78 years old Grandma (mother's mother) was just admitted to Tan Tock Seng Hospital on 2 August 2014 (Saturday) around 11 am to A&E due to having fallen down and unable to walk.

She was given X-ray and found out that she got a crack at her hip plate. However she will need to undergo treatment and she will need to stay at the hospital.

Initially we were told there was not enough patients wards when we ask for a ward B2 type and later on we received a SMS from the hospital on her bed and ward number.

Here is where the problem start; when my uncle went down at night 9pm to visit and pass her some of her stuffs like jackets and her favor mug, he was not happy that she was placed at the corridor in front of the nurse counter, instead of a ward.

He was told that there was NO available ward or room for her, and so she had to sleep at the corridor of the B1 type ward. Why is this happening when the hospital send us an sms of her ward and bed number, but she is to sleep at the corridor, where every other patients' family and relatives, and nurse are all passing by.

IS she meant for them to just watch and look at?

What happened to the promised available ward that claimed by Minster Gan Kim Yong on news and newspaper?

For that one day for her to sleep at the corridor, my family was able to take it that there was no available room for her at moment, and were understandable.

The next day at noon, my 2nd uncle and his family went down and was told that there was an AVAILABLE B1 type ward, which he agreed to pay more as long as there is a ward/room for her.

They were told to wait as the patient was awaiting discharge and they will push her bed in afterward. At 4 pm, my uncle went down and was shocked to see her to be outside at the same corridor, and not the promised ward. When he went and rise the issue to the nurse at the counter, he was told that they were trying to grab hold of a available wards for her the soonest possible, and he went to Square 2 to grab some bite.

At 5 pm, my mother, along with my sister and I, met up with my uncle to go and visit my grandma. We were shocked to see her bed still at the same corridor, and when we ask them, they told us there IS an AVAILABLE ward for her and will transfer to the ward by 6 pm.

As we continued to wait and prepare for the transfer, we were getting impatient and angry as the time passed by. We were told again the same ward and bed number by another nurse and will need to wait for the transfer. Wait till 8pm, when my grandma asked us to go back, we asked again when is the transfer and that is when we were told there is no available wards for her.

When we asked again if there really no available wards/room, they just told us there is nope. Just imagine this, having a going 80 years old grandma sleeping at the corridor for 2 night straight.

If one was to give an excuse that she is given the extra care since she is at the counter, since she had a crack in her hip plate and unable to walk properly, and having the fall risk tab on her. What would you feel if you were the one sleeping at that corridor for 2 night straight and having one passing and watching you.

We were promised that she will be given a wards, but if this go on, den what are we paying her bills for? For her to sleep at a bed at the hospital at one of the ward corridor? We do not mind the paying for the care given by the nurse and food and bed, but what kind of ward payment are we paying for?

Please help me Share this post and let people know of what happened to my grandma at TTSH.

Pay money..... If you pay money... You will get service..... Is the golden rule, that not just work in singapore but the rest fo the world. So if you dont have money, dont get sick and pray that you can die early.

In NZ, she'd be stuck in the corridor for a week.

Besides being right next to the nurses' station means she'll get far more attention and care.

The problem with sinkies is that they fail to take positives out of any situation. They're far too fixated on the negative aspects of life. No wonder they're all miserable old sods.

Too bad your ah mah wasn't Mrs Robert Mugabe or Kwa Geok Choo. Otherwise she would have received instant and attentive medical treatment, in a private ward with a cozy bed. No corridor treatment for those folks.

Isn't B1 a paying ward?

Yes that is why she has the corridor exclusively to herself. look the image. Do you see any other beds there?

Patients recover more quickly if they are up and about as soon as possible after an operation. This is the current conventional wisdom the world over.

When my neighbor went for hip replacement surgery, he was home 4 days after the operation and the doctor told him to take short walks daily despite the fact that he was still on crutches.

no 2 hip surgery are the same and no 2 patients are the same.

when old folks get sent home, it would be assailed to be a nobody who is left behind. no one to take care off them, to cloth them, to feed them.

They purposely build less C class and B2 wards so that you cannot use your medisave.

Then they'll blame it on a bed shortage, so you LL also have to take B1 or A class wards.

A hospital is not an old folk's home. One of the reasons why there is often a shortage of beds in hospitals is because they are forced by circumstance beyond their control to feed and house people who have nowhere to go and nobody to take care of them when they are actually well enough to be discharged.

This is not the fault of the hospital. It is the fault of the family for not being filial. The younger generation are supposed to look after their parents and elderly relatives. The state cannot play nursemaid to everyone.

Sleeping along the corridor is the least of the ah ma concerns.

Wait till she gets 'treated' by the sub-standards doctors and get the real taste of what World class medical standard is. The final outcome is that his ah ma won't be able to walk after the supposed treatment and the reply from these medical fucktards would be ' these are some of the expected complications'.

And to top it off, having to pay World class prices for such treatment too!

Song bo, sinkie!LoL

There are good doctors and incompetent fools in all countries. Many people die annually from medical misadventure. It is hardly unique to Singapore.

[h=1]Medical errors cost ACC $7.6m[/h] [h=2][/h] KATE NEWTON Last updated 05:00 13/02/2012

[h=2]Health[/h]

Two people who ended up as paraplegics after medical treatment have received more than $200,000 each in compensation.
The two patients topped a list of payouts made by ACC last year to victims of treatment injuries – including missed or delayed diagnoses, medication errors and botched surgery.

Figures released to The Dominion Post under the Official Information Act show a total of $7.6 million was paid to 3600 people for treatment injuries in 2011, with nearly 1200 claims still to be processed.

The 10 highest payouts accounted for $1.2m. That included someone whose pelvis was fractured during treatment, another patient who suffered massive bruising, and someone who was burnt during treatment.

ACC did not provide details of the circumstances in which patients were hurt.

The state-funded Health Quality and Safety Commission is shortly due to release its annual report on "serious and sentinel events", which are potentially preventable hospital deaths, injuries and mishaps.

Previous reports have identified wound infections and medication errors as some of the most common ways in which patients are harmed.

Surgical "checklists" have also been introduced in most public hospitals to prevent errors before and during operations.
Staff at Hutt Hospital were told in 2010 that they must leave their mobile phones outside when in the hospital's operating theatres, after surgeons left a swab inside a patient when they were distracted by a cellphone call.
The patient was not harmed but had to have an extra operation to remove the swab.

In line with previous years, orthopaedic surgery and general practice treatment injuries were most common, accounting for a third of all accepted ACC claims. There are more than 15 million patient visits to GPs each year.

Orthopaedic surgeons operate on any conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopaedics Association chief executive Flora Gilkison said the high number of claims was likely to be due to the volume of orthopaedic surgery carried out.

In July 2005, ACC replaced "medical misadventure" with the treatment injury category, meaning claimants no longer had to prove an error had been made.

ACC also paid out $35m in continuing compensation to people injured in previous years.

Top 10 Treatment Injury Payouts

ACC paid $7.6 million in compensation to victims of treatment injuries in 2011. The 10 most costly claims accounted for nearly $1.2m.

Paraplegia – $260,000; Paraplegia – $214,000; Haematoma (bruising) – $128,000; Bone not healing – $108,000; Pneumonia – $95,000; Burns – $94,000; Vitreous haemorrhage (internal bleeding of the eye) – $83,000; Wound infection – $78,000; Prosthetic failure – $76,000; Fractured pelvis – $65,000.

Yah, of course, she has the corridor to herself, might as well, place her at the corridor leading to the mortuary, that will kill two birds with one stone, so to speak. The answer is PAY MORE...all they need to say is UPGRADE my mother to A class...lo & behold, she will be wheel into one Immediately. Just like buyING food at the fast food joints, "UPSIZE"....& do not forget, the other question " MEMBER"??, "PASSION"???

There are bed spaces, near TTSH waiting to be filled....Novena Medical centre, Novena Specialist centre, Mt. Elizabeth Hospital Novena, all their medical suites are still available...can try Ren Ci Hospital near there too..

ALL ONE NEED TO ASK IS "Upgrade"..."MEMBER"??:p

Totally unacceptable-more so when ministers are earning the highest salaries in the history of mankind.

So will WP bring this up in Parliament-how many beds are occupied by foreigners (PR's included) when this poor old lady has to sleep on the corridor?
