This Ionescu is really stupid. If he had stayed on in Singapore to face the music, the penalty for killing some pedestrian would likely be a $2000 fine and banned for driving in SINGAPORE for 5 years. Ionescu ran road and was arrested and made to stand trial in Romania which has dragged on for more than 4 years. During the 4 years, he has been incarcerated for at least 6 months or more. What a lousy deal!

I'm convinced he ran out of sheer arrogance.

Romanian court to hand sentence in Singapore hit-and-run case

Tuesday, 19 March 2013 16:21

BUCHAREST, March 19, 2013 (AFP) - A Romanian court said Tuesday that it will issue next week its sentence in a 2009 deadly hit-and-run accident caused by a former Romanian diplomat.
“The judge should announce the sentence on March 27,” Viorela Ferencz, spokeswoman for the Bucharest court, told AFP.
She added, however, that the decision could be delayed if the judge requests more time to study the case.
Silviu Ionescu, who was Romania's charge d'affaires in Singapore, allegedly hit three pedestrians there while driving a car belonging to the Romanian mission on the night of Dec.15, 2009.
One of the pedestrians, a 30-year-old Malaysian, died.
During closing arguments earlier this month, prosecutor Elisabeth Irimia asked the court to hand Ionescu a “medium sentence”, without specifying how long it should be.
Ionescu's lawyer Nelu Tasca said sentences for manslaughter usually range between two and seven years in Romania.
The former diplomat's defence team argued during the trial that he should be acquitted on grounds there was no direct evidence linking him to the crime.
Ionescu, who fled the country shortly after the accident, has always claimed the car of the Romanian mission was stolen.
His trial started in October 2010 in Bucharest.
Ionescu has said that if convicted, he would likely file an appeal.

Very funny, but tragically true.

He will get a few thousand bucks fine, plus maybe a one year suspension in driving license that is only enforced in sinkieland. His fine will be further reduced because he was driving a luxury car with sound proofing, so cannot hear the impact. Hence not guilty for hit and run.

If the government of India could stop the Italian Ambassador from leaving India, why couldn't the Singapore government do this? Afterall this guy Ionescu wasn't a big shot at the Romanian embassy..... notwithstanding diplomatic immunity (a subject for further discussion). So which country has the bigger balls?

Exactly... heck, he could probably have sued the victims for damaging his car with their bodies. At the end of the day, he might have come up richer than before he langgar anyone!

Maybe but the idiot has already been locked up for at least 6 months, lost his job and all credibility.

This is the same guy who said he has no faith in Singapore court...is it that he feels he will be convicted and be harshly punished..???
