Red wine-heart research slammed with fraud charges

Connecticut University researcher committed more than 100 acts of data fabrication and falsification.

US, January 12, 2012 -
A University of Connecticut researcher who studied the link between aging and a substance found in red wine has committed more than 100 acts of data fabrication and falsification, the university said Wednesday, throwing much of his work into doubt.

Dipak K. Das, who directed the university's Cardiovascular Research Center, studied resveratrol, touted by a number of scientists and companies as a way to slow aging or remain healthy as people get older.

Among his findings, according to a work promoted by the University of Connecticut in 2007, was that "the pulp of grapes is as heart-healthy as the skin, even though the antioxidant properties differ."

"We have a responsibility to correct the scientific record and inform peer researchers across the country," Philip Austin, the university's interim vice president for health affairs, said in a statement.

The university said an anonymous tip led to an investigation that began in 2008. A 60,000-page report - the summary of which is available at bit.Iy/xkyS4A - resulted, outlining 145 counts of fabrication and falsification of data. Other members of Das' laboratory may have been involved, and are being investigated, the report continues.

UConn has "declined to accept $890,000 in federal grants awarded to" Das, according to the statement, and has begun dismissal proceedings. The university has alerted 11 journals that published Das' work, and has also worked on the case with the U.S. Office of Research Integrity, which investigates alleged misconduct by federal grant recipients.

The journals include Antioxidants & Redox Signaling, where Das was one of the editors in chief, and the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry.

Although many scientists have been skeptical of various claims made about resveratrol, it has garnered significant commercial interest. GlaxoSmithKline bought Sirtris, a company that worked on the compound in 2008 for $720 million, but later discontinued work on one version of a drug that mimics its activity because of disappointing results.

A Las Vegas resveratrol maker called Longevinex has promoted Das' research, and he appears in a lengthy video touting the nutrient as the next aspirin.

Das also shared a 2002 patent on the use of another compound in grape skins called proanthocyanidin to prevent and treat heart conditions.

Other scientists have taken notice of Das' work, citing 30 of his papers more than 100 times each, according to Thomson Scientific's Web of Knowledge. Last year, he won an award from the International Association of Cardiologists.

Still, one aging researcher said the impact of the fraud on the field will be minimal.

"There are many investigators who are working on resveratrol," said Dr. Nir Barzilai, of Albert Einstein College of Medicine. "That doesn't mean we know the whole truth. But Rome wasn't built on Dr. Das."

Das, who could not be reached for comment, said in a 2010 letter to university officials that the investigation was a "conspiracy" against him. The work was "repeated by many scientists all over the world," he wrote.

"As you know, because of the development of tremendous amount of stress in my work environment in recent months, I became a victim of stroke for which I am undergoing treatment," he wrote in a separate letter.

i love science.. u have peer reviews, and other scientists will grill you on your findings, data, samplings, theories, research etc... till there is little or no ambiguities.

Unlike religion, any tom, dick and harry can claim god spoke to them and they can start their own religion/church/cult groups.

Agree. Its not only the religion that escapes this but alternative medicine and the general placebo/supplement industry which is huge.

Where profits are involved they will attempt to cover up or suppress information that will hurt profits. For example the tobacco industries knew that smoking is bad for your health & suppressed information:eek:

Same thing with Big Pharma, large amounts of profits are involved, so there is strong motivation to hide the dangerous side effects of their products.
In alternative medicine no one is going to big profits so there is less motive to cheat people. How much profit can someone make pushing vtamin C, ginseng, etc when no one has any patents on it:confused:

Many of these supplements are sold over the counter. If they are dangerous do you really think they would be allowed to do that:confused:

Im sure Singapore will welcome him with open arms.

Based on what we had observed, we will probably give him a higher position and salary too...

I have no illusions that big pharmaceuticals are profiteering and have been engaged in cover-ups and criminal conspiracy to hide side effects etc. the good part is that there is an army of researchers that they can step and prove them wrong as they have done in the past.

Alternative medicine/Nutrional supplements in the main are safe because they are have little effect or no effect on the body. Its the placebo effect that they are selling and therefore inherently safe. You can swallow a whole bottle of these supplements and you will not die. You can go for chelation theraphy everyday and you won't die. That is why there is little or no regulation as most people are not gullible. Nobody is going to spend time and effort for a small group of gullible people who fool themselves but there is no actual harm. Only the pocket gets lighter.

By the way IV chelation can only be done at the doctors office.
Some in the medical establishment has tried to prevent other doctors from using IV chelation to treat patients with cardiovascular problems.

If there is no profit Big Pharma is not going to "spend time and effort" to market it. However they are probably studying "mother nature" in their labs trying to come up with a patentable version. Where do you think they come up with all these drugs:confused:

Many out there already know how dangerous drugs out there are but do you know the dangers:confused:
I guess for some they need to be victims before they truely understand:( Recently someone I knew passed away, but his problems started 10+ years ago when he started taking "drugs" after suffering a stroke. After 10 years the "drugs" caused his kidneys to shutdown & he had to go for dialysis:eek:. He passed away last year.

So in his case "drugs" caused him $$$, quality of life, and probably his life.
