Assembly centres on polling day confirmed for Tan Cheng Bock, Tony Tan
04:46 AM Aug 25, 2011The Elections Department has reminded candidates that campaigning and election advertising for the Presidential Election will not be allowed tomorrow, which is Cooling-off Day.
The department said this is to let voters reflect rationally on various issues raised during the campaign before going to the polls on Saturday.
Candidates and supporters should also refrain from attending public events on Cooling-off Day and Polling Day.
Presidential candidate broadcasts on television and reports in the media relating to election matters are allowed on Cooling-off Day. Those flouting the rules can be fined and jailed.
Meanwhile, the assembly centre for presidential candidate Dr Tan Cheng Bock is Jurong East Stadium, while that for Dr Tony Tan is Toa Payoh Stadium. The Police Elections Liaison Office issued permits for the locations yesterday. Candidates, their supporters and other members of the public can gather and wait for the results of the Presidential Election to be announced at these centres.
The assembly centres will open from 8pm on Polling Day to 30 minutes after the result has been announced.
Police have urged the public to leave the stadiums in an orderly and peaceful manner. Officers will be deployed to ensure their safety and security.
They will monitor the law and order situation closely and will not hesitate to take firm action against law-breakers or those whose behaviour may lead to public order problems. Channel NewsAsia
