Unlike the Man from UNCLE, the Saint was actually written by a Singapore boy...

1154-1.jpg

Leslie Charteris (12 May 1907, born Singapore– 15 April 1993), born Leslie Charles Bowyer-Yin, was a half-Chinese, half English author of primarily mystery fiction, as well as a screenwriter. He was from St Andrew's school, I think.....

Roger Moore played the Saint for many years:

Only Victor who went on to work for HP and Juliet, a lawyer did alright. The rest of the sibling and their families turned to crime.

Richard spent his life cheating and acting as informant to various US agencies, went to prison all over the world. He now dragged his son Warren into the mess.

Wlliam and his wife also followed into the same thing and they brought along their kids. Everytime arrested the kids ended up getting detained and then released to their grandmother. They used to have shop in Katong selling perfumes from their forays in the overseas market. To spite the authorities, they named the shop Kidd Traders after the name of the girl Sunny murdered.

Sister and his husband nicknamed the Pink Panther were members of the most notorious shoplifting gang.

Never seen a family as notorious as this.

His siblings (they were badly affected by his death) were all highly intelligent, expecially Victor. The other 2 younger ones, Richard and William had altercations with the government agencies, and in fact I heard Richard was in some deep shit for international crimes. William on the other hand, as a helicopter pilot in the Air Force, left when he landed the aircraft in the Johor Straits. The 2 sisters did not appear in the limelight, but Juliet became a lawyer.

Sunny took out multiple insurance policies from a number of agencies and there was a previous attempt to kill while driving in Malaysia but she escaped injury when the car crashed and her side of the was crushed. Those policies lapsed and he tried again.

The beneficiary of the Police was his mother at Karikal Lane.

It was more less thought that he would not get any payout and the Insurance company was happily eating the money knowing that he was up to no good. Nowdays the Insurance companies won't do it as they will be accused of facilitating the crime by not informing the police of these policies.

I think Sunny Ang could have had gotten away with the crime had he insured Jenny for less........ anyway, always be careful if your bf/gf/husband/wife wants to take you skin-diving.....

You are right. The Govt had notified all Govt bodies and GLC not to house the Isreali embassy in their buildings due to security threat. Out of desperation they did it to convince the govt to allow them to be housed in Govt building to enjoy the security. It made it worse. Nobody wanted them.

It is not a mystery. The Israelis wanted more police presence etc but felt they were not given priority. They planted the bomb themselves to get the upper echelons to act swiftly.

The blast served its purpose. Undercover officers kept observation for months while uniformed chaps made their presence felt. We weren't good enough for the Israelis. They committed a crime and yet we LL.

If real damage was the agenda, the bomb would have gone off at lunch time or at 5pm when that location would be crowded.

Wow! A very eye-opening piece of trivia! I never watched the Roger Moore version of the Saint but the later one.

Even then, was too young to understand what was going on.

But never knew that the author was in fact born and bred here on our native shores!

Thanks for keeping this thread alive. It's an oasis amongst all the bickering and squabbling.

I hope that this thread too can be kept clean.

Joseph Conrad's first novel, Almayer's Folly was set in Singapore. This I believe is partly because he had been through Singapore as a sailor.

I thought Victor graduated and worked for Shell as a Chemical Engineer? Apart from Juliet the youngest was Jeanette but she was like 12 years younger than William? She hardly knew Sunny as he was hanged when she was so young?

William was divorced from his first wife I believe, and was operating a shop near Change Alley. Yes, it was a sad state of affairs for the Ang family as most of them were very intelligent.

I think all of them were RI boys.

For sure, I know William was. I was same year with him.

Yes I think so too. Richard was 2 years ahead of William and both took their Primary education in Telok Kurau, before RI, and both usually top their standard in Primary School. I would say, Sunny had a great influence in their lives and they worshipped him. His death must have affected them badly.

I think all of them were RI boys.

Anyone knows Richard's whereabouts? Is he somewhere languishing in jail out there in Texas or France?

I hear another version......... in late 1971 the first batch of poodles from PTF were selected for sniper course training at SAFTI...... the SAFTI sniper course at that time was actually meant for soldiers and the course trainees comprised mostly of regulars from the CDO and Rangers...... the training was super siong under the Israeli / SAS instructors.

One of the PTF poodle could not tahan the training and went bonkers...... as he was from the Queensway Base....... he went awol with the rifle and shot that innocent girl.......... he was sent to Woodbridge and nobody has seen him since.

Disclaimer : This version was told by the instructors from SAFTI on why they do not like SPF poodles attending their courses...... I do not know the sniper or anyone else involved in this case

I may be wrong but I had seen the photograph of the first sniper batch of Safti's Sniper Wing and I remember it as circa 1972.

And no, there were no Israeli or SAS instructors. The eventual sniper instructors were sent to Britain, West Germany and Canada to learn the finer points of sniper warfare.

PTT sniper trainees were welcomed and respected by NSF for their fitness, discipline and endurance despite an age gap of up to 12 years between them and the NS boys.

There were no "Rangers" in those days.

Hidden History : Did RI/RJC kapo its motto? Plagiarism in high places?

180px-RICrest.jpg

Did RI copy it's motto from below? ( Also note that there are Arabic words also in the Raffles crest)

The Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George is an order of chivalry founded on 28 April 1818 by George, Prince Regent, later George IV of the United Kingdom
The Order's motto is Auspicium melioris ævi (Latin for "Token of a better age"). Its patron saints, as the name suggests, are St. Michael the Archangel and St. George. One of its primary symbols is that of St Michael trampling over Satan.

The Order is the sixth-most senior in the British honours system

Current Knights and Dames Grand Cross
# Sovereign: Queen Elizabeth II
# Grand Master: His Royal Highness The Duke of Kent,

Honorary Appointments

* Lee Kuan Yew, Honorary GCMG, CH (1972)
* Fidel V. Ramos, Honorary GCMG (1995)

* Kofi Annan, Honorary GCMG (2007)[8]
* Shimon Peres, Honorary GCMG (2008)[9][10]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_St_Michael_and_St_George

Random tidbit:

"Auspicium melioris aevi" does NOT translate as "Hope for a better age" but "Omen of a better age" http://gssq.blogspot.com/2009/04/random-tidbit-auspicium-melioris-aevi.html

see also : http://www.sgwiki.com/wiki/Auspicium_Melioris_Aevi

The motto of the Raffles family is in cruce triumphans, meaning triumphing in the cross...... not "Auspicium melioris aevi"

ok..... I admit I was also from the same school .....horrors....

Read my disclaimer  .......... for the facts relating to the story please interview the old-timer instructors from SAFTI :p

Richard prefers the US and the Islands and last I heard is that father and son in Hawaii. William is now fluent in French and prefers France. Jeanette and her husband do their trade in Singapore.

My sense is not that they are intelligent as many are but they had a penchant for the high life very early in their life when they could not afford it. This was when they were schooling. That's why Sunny wanted to fund his lifestyle with Insurance fraud. The rest of the family are the same.

Even daddy was rubbing shoulders with people well above his station in life. It reminds me of those in the hotel trade who deal with VIPs all their life that they find it difficult to buy clothes or dine in places within their means.

Jeanette's husband was a surprise. He began life as a CNB officer and then became a shoplifter. And it was to supply William's shop with perfumes.

I am pretty sure the driving force was the mother as the father seemed to be a very quiet fellow. He was the High Court Registrar I think and obviously rubs shoulders with the top legal minds of that time. Even he could not save his son from the gallows.

Jeanette's husband was a surprise. He began life as a CNB officer and then became a shoplifter. And it was to supply William's shop with perfumes.

Lee Phui Yen, or The Pink Panther as he was known to everyone, was a legendary undercover officer. Together with his partner AngMoKia (William Porter), they penetrated heroin traffficking rings and brought numerous traffickers to justice by posing as drug buyers. Pink Panther had the face of a crook, and it was simply impossible not to sell drugs to him if you were a drug trafficker.

Somewhere along the line, the Pink Panther lost his sense of direction. Right and wrong became blurred to him. He joined a syndicate of shop lifters and terrorised all the shopping centres. Each time they hit, they would get away with thousands. He was caught and was jailed. On his release, he became a human trafficker... a "snakehead" who smuggled illegal immigrants to the West. Poor guy, I wonder what he is doing now.....
