"Gross national happiness."

all the countries who ever talked about GNH have shit infrastructure, high mortality rates, or going bankrupt ...

Do these worry you? I prefer China's way of dealing with news like these - jail anyone who cause social unrest by mentioning shit infrastructure, high mortality rates, or going bankrupt.

That is why China has excellent infrastructure, low mortality rates, AIDS almost non-existence, housing inflation 1% and well reserved banks.

all the countries who ever talked about GNH have been writing about doomaday scenerios since the 70s.

NO OPTION?

Can't get PR offshore means no option?

I see many mexicans and Filipinos on work permit here. Work a few years in laborer type jobs later can apply for PR.

There is NO SUCH THING AS NO OPTION.

Not willing to pay the price. Want to leave singapore can just don't expect everything tone way and presented on a platter.

Even those political prisoners can be released if they renounce their allegiances. But
They CHOOSE to fight on and not give in.

No right or wrong just free to choose. But be prepared to pay the price.
nice to hear that there's still a alternate way to get in, but then is it easy to get the work permit there? Canada is not like sinkieland where FTs can easily get work permit you know.

Are those with low education and unskilled Singaporeans set to be doomed?

PAP giving PRs like candies to even prc prostitutes, and set policies that make it impossible for us to survive in SG, more jialat in the future should PAP remain in power beyond upcoming GE.

It is whether people have the means and not set to doomed. It is like wanting a shirt. If the person has the means (money), buy a Tommy Hilfiger shirt. If the person does not has the means, settle for a Giordano shirt.

So if the person is skilled, has the money or has relatives in first world country, go for the first world country. If the person is not skilled and has no money, stay where he is or go for "Giordano" countries like Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Taiwan, China etc.

Yeah doomed. I think mayliewwan is right. If you are not a doctor or engineer then forget about coming to Canada to be a unskilled labourer. You won't even stand a chance. To be a factory worker here in Canada you have to be doctor, lawyer, engineer or some professional.

Just stay in Singapore. Best country in the world.

doctors in Canada are not made to work like dogs and don't want to work like dogs.

So sorry unlike Singapore there are no dogtors in Canada. But Singapore has short waiting times, super efficient, good quality health care, but people complain like crazy.

You can never please a patient. Which is why we call them patients because it is a fantasy of doctors to have patient customers.

I can testify that it is next to impossible to get PR for those labourers working in the farm or tim Holtons....when their contracts end, they have to seek further employment or out they go. I know of a few Chinese nationals are have to leave and one lady beg me to employ her. A very pretty looking one.

But I told her I cannot produce fake employment and I do not need to employ anyone either.

So please fo goodness sake do not try the "labourer" approach.

Re: Competitive, Greedy, Selfish and Status Conscious

Charlie99: "I do not drive a BMW, Lexus, or Mercedes" don't use Singapore standard on cars. Here in North Amercia, trucks cost MORE than branded cars.

I have clients who drive 4x4 trucks of price ranging from $60,000 to $90,000. You can get a BMW or Merz at Can $50,000.

Come to think of it, Singaporeans are such suckers....not the COE increases to Sin $47,000 for cars below 1,600 cc... This is only for a piece of paper! With this money one can already buy a low end Merz or a good BMW.

Wow, it needs to have lots of money in Singapore just to be POOR!

I'll be frank. I am not too sure about this route. But I do have 2 mexican colleagues who have been working at the windows factory I am working at and have just applied for their LMO in preparation for their PR application. I suppose there is a chance they might get their PRs? They have been working at the factory for about 2 years now and are still on work permits.

I will keep posted here the progress of their application.

The main point is not so much whether you can get a PR through the labourer route here in Canada.

But rather, if you are so unhappy in Singapore and do desire to move to another country, you should go out and see what your options are. Everyone has different circumstances. It is up to you where you want to go and what you want to do. If there is a chance take it and go for it (if it is what you desire of course). If someone else has failed doing something does it mean you will also fail? If someone has succeeded in doing something does it mean that if you do it you will also succeed?

Don't let me or others say what you can or cannot do. Ultimately, it is you who is the captain of your ship.

To share with you Henry Ford's famous quote "Whether you think that you can, or that you can't, you are usually right." To a certain extent that quote is true.

So far I am having a really good time in Canada. Really enjoying my job as a laborer. I used to scoff at the saying that "if you love your job, you haven't worked a day in your life". While I was in Singapore I believed that nobody would ever love their job and it was best to just take whatever job offered the most money so that you could retire as early as possible. I can understand why I was so wrong now.

To come to Canada and work and then apply for PR is not a very safe option. To me this is too great a risk to take especially if you have kids coming along.

Secure the visa to immigrate to Canada then you come.

Check up the jobs scores in the Canada immigration. Say a welder scores the highest point then go to ITE for a crash course....yea ITE TRADE course...welding, plumbling, car mechanics, laser cutter etc.

Then get some connection to work for FREE doing spare times like Sat or Sun to clock in enough hours of experience. With this trade cert (just entry level is good enough) and with say 1 year of part-tiem experience, you stand a much better chance to get a visa.

I have seem with my own eyes, workers got to leave Canada after their working visa expired.....remember I have lived here for almost 20 years and I sell life insurance .... I meet lots of people and I hear lots of good and bad news.

Henry Ford's famous quote "Whether you think that you can, or that you can't, you are usually right." has its own virtue like positive thinking but then this is beyond positive thinking because there is a immigration law which is beyong positive thinking. His quote does apply good to a NEW IMMIGRATE who uses positive thinking to overcome the odds but not change the law.

Like in Singapore, no matter how positive I am, I have to serve the N.S. and waste my time in the reservist. Of course I can be positive about it as I can enjoy fresh air in the army training and made new friends with the mosquitoes. Beyond that I am screwed.

So please sercure your visa before coming to Canada.

On the other hand, if you come to do a study like technical course or a degree, then you might stand a much better chance to gain employment and later get the visa for P.R.

For the window labourer it might not be classified as labourer but as skilled worker, so he still stand a chance.

But I thought nayr69sg was referring to those Maxican labourers who come to the farms in the summer to work as farm hands....these group of labourers stand almost no chance to get a PR visa.

I have been here close to 30 years, i work in most blue collar work (general worker)

I do not came with any document just a holiday visa pass, got hitch to my sweetheart and the rest is history.

You can always come on a work visa, when it is up ask your boss to sponsor you, that is another way to get around it ( need to work at least 2 years to apply for PR, provided yr employer give you good ref).

Getting a work visa in the first place is not easy these days, quite impossible for most job categories, even for simple jobs like MacDonald's because it will deny Canadians of the job, not unless you want to work in a summer job picking strawberries in a farm.

Your words are very true. In Singapore, I was always told to train for the job that pays the most, not the job that I love the most. After I left Singapore, I realised that when you do the job you love, you get to take your skills to a higher level and excel at the job. That will naturally lead to a higher payout. By comparison, in Singapore, you may get paid higher but if you do not love the work you do, you will feel hollow inside. It may perhaps explain why experienced Singaporeans can so easily be replaced by cheaper foreigners and why some companies would choose to pay more for an experienced foreigner because he probably has real skills.

Do agree with exSINGAPOREAN. If you can get your PR before moving to the country of choice that would be best.

It is that same reason that I did not migrate to Australia. They would give work permit for me to practice there but no PR. Canada I would get PR but cannot practice from the start.

What did I choose? I chose the PR.

If you cannot get PR from an offshore application then you will have to find other ways if you really want to migrate.

Migration is not for everyone. Wife must be supportive. Wife's career might be in the way. One's own career might be in the way. Parents. Children. Business. For some the price is too much to pay. There is no right or wrong. If you can't you can't. If you can you can. It is up to you.

With regards to NS. Again it is a matter of the price one has to pay. There are people in Singapore who have to serve NS under the law but end up not serving. They do pay a price. Whether it is wise or not, good or not, it is really the individual's choice.

Unusually Cold for Toronto in Dec

In the morning of Dec 13, 2010, the temperature in Toronto was minus 12 C, but with the wind chill, it felt like minus 23 C.

Earlier this monring, Dec 14, 2010, it was minus 11 C, but felt like minus 22 C.

It is very cold, and the City of Toronto issued an extreme cold alert.

Re: Unusually Cold for Toronto in Dec

I just came in from outdoors all wrapped up tinkering with one of my cars' wipers. My outdoor thermometer says its -ve 5 degrees in the shade in my part of GTA. Looking at the bright side, its a beautiful snow-covered clear and sunny afternoon and days such as this makes the cold worth it. I am thankful to be here in this cold with the time and freedom to tinker around with whatever catches my fancy, both indoors and outdoors.
