Man gets RM2.2mil fine

JOHOR BARU: A 26-year-old carpenter was fined a whopping RM2.2mil at a magistrate’s court here for attempting to smuggle 425 handphones into the country.
Fam Che You was charged with committing the offence at 7.15am on Dec 11, 2007, in a motorcycle lane at the Johor Causeway.
According to the statement of facts, Fam was caught with the handphones worth RM206,530, found stashed in a bag on his motorcycle.
Fam was on his way back from Singapore when he was caught.
He was charged with evading import restrictions with the intention of deceiving the Government under Customs Regulations 1977 and Customs (Prohibition of Exports) Order 1988.
He was charged under Section 135(1)(e) of the Customs Act for possessing and transporting illegal goods.
Magistrate Hafizah Johor Ariff Johor fixed the fine at RM2.2mil in default three months’ imprisonment.
Fam did not settle the fine.
At another court here, a Singa_porean man was acquitted and discharged of possessing 98g of heroin.
Wong Koon Khew was charged with committing the offence under Section 39A of the Dangerous Drugs Act at 4.30pm on March 13, 2008 at Taman Sentosa here.
Sessions Court judge Norazlan Ahmad freed Wong after he found disparities in the case presented by the prosecution.
