The above building is diagonally opposite present day Chijmes, currently admin building of SMU.
At the left, the building under construction is the NTUC Income Building - build on the site of a former small church.
This shophouse building ground floor is a scientific instruments shop selling testubes, beakers & other laboratory ware ...
Most noteworthy is its corner unit (next to sidelane next to NTUC Income Building) - the infamous bar called Papaya Garden Bar.
Why I know? I studied at St Anthony's Boys' School & SJI ....
They don't make them that big anymore :(
Don't think so, johnny333, looks like but there seems not enough space for Istana entrance in the middle ....
The second pix looks like bras basah rd with church of good shepherd at the right & rendezvous restaurant buiilding at bottom left. But in the middle, SJI & the field opposite seems to be compressed ....
Looking at postnews old pix, you can see once upon a time, spore at night is pretty colorful with lots of outdoor neon signs.
I remember when there was a Guillermard Rd Circus where presently it is a traffic junction. Back in the 60s/early 70s, at night, there was a whole bank of huge neon signs on top of shophouses & on specially constructed iron stands on the lor 8/10/side ... very colorful landmark at night, coming from nicholl highway, you reach Guillermad Circus, you know either you are going katong or going down to paya lebar....
Then URA scrap & outlaw all outdoor neon signs...
some years back, they make a u-turn, trying to incentivise businesses to bring some 'color' & 'life' back to the night skyline with neon signs but with lots of rules & redtape ..... Bureaucrats .......
