Model, 28, dies after suffering bleeding in the brain while singing at KTV

SINGAPORE - A 28-year-old freelance model was singing in a karaoke lounge with her friends on Dec 12 when she suddenly felt numbness in half her body, along with a headache.

Ms Karen Stella Wong was taken to the Singapore General Hospital (SGH), where she went into a coma and died three days later, Shin Min Daily News said in a report on Tuesday (Dec 26).

Her father Laurence Wong told The Straits Times on Tuesday that doctors certified her cause of death as acute intracerebral haemorrhage, where bleeding occurs within the skull.

Ms Wong, a marketing consultant who did freelance modelling on the side such as for telecommunications company Singtel, did not die because of singing in a too-high-pitched voice as reported by Chinese-language newspapers, he added.

Mr Wong, who works in retail, told ST that she had no known medical history and was just on a night out singing with friends.

"My family has no history of acute intracerebral haemorrhage. Once in a while she got a headache like normal people do," said the 60-year-old. "The SGH doctor said that even a common headache could be a symptom, but no doctor would ask a normal guy with a headache to go for a scan."

He said he was surprised when told that Ms Wong, who was single, had to donate her organs under the law.

Under the Human Organ Transplant Act, first enacted in 1987, all Singapore citizens and permanent residents who are at least 21 years old and of sound mind will have their kidneys, hearts, livers and corneas removed upon their death if the following conditions are met.

The organs will be removed and donated if the patient died in a hospital, their organs are suitable for transplant and there are suitable recipients for the organs.

He struggled with the idea at first. However, he and his wife eventually donated her two kidneys and liver.

"I heard they managed to do transplants on three patients, and I feel it's a blessing that at least she can save three people," said Mr Wong.

Ms Wong was cremated on Dec 20. An only child, she was very close to her mother.

"My main worry now is my wife. They were like sisters. How is she going to handle it? I put her up in a relative's house for the time being," he said.

"It's very difficult for me. I cried for two days. No matter what, I told myself I must be strong for my wife and my mother. My mother does not know yet. She does not read newspapers."

Mr Wong said his daughter was a cheerful girl who loved to joke.

"She didn't give me much problems," he said. "I just recall the last moment she left the house - she said 'daddy I'm going out', and she was still joking with the maid and my mother."

I am going to assume here that SGH did not do the 3 transplants for free. This opens up all the things that are wrong with this mandatory system. Who received the transplants? Were these people who could afford to pay? Were they rich patients who outbidded others? Should not the next of kin have the last word in who should get the organs and not the hospital? The hospital should reveal to the donor's family how much money they are receiving for the transplants or whether they did it for free. Otherwise its just a scam for a govt owned hospital to make money from dead people's organs without their approval or input.

Not any Tom dick and Harry can do a transplant. It requires great skill. Your organs useless when you dead, money also useless so why not help a poor surgeon pay for their third mortgage?

I think sg hospitals do not charge for the organs, only surgery costs, at least for sinkees.

Surgery cost is $45,000 for kidney. U think they make money or that is the cost at no markup? Of course, they will make money.

Kidney transplant cost: SGH replies

The article, "80-cent lollies to pay for a kidney op" (Jan 8), estimated that the kidney transplant for Madam Salbiah Ahmad would cost $45,000.

However, it did not clarify that this figure is before MediShield Life claims. Madam Salbiah can also apply for Medifund if she is in financial difficulty.

A substantial portion of the medical bills for Singaporean patients who opt for subsidised ward types is covered by government subsidy.

Patients can generally also draw on MediShield Life and Medisave for hospital bills and selected outpatient treatments. Needy Singaporeans can seek further assistance from Medifund.

Patients who are on the wait list for a kidney transplant are counselled by the Singapore General Hospital on their clinical care and financing options, while they wait for the availability of a donor.

We have got in touch with Madam Salbiah to share the available options, and we wish her the best in her health.

45k sounds about right for half a day's job for two teams of transplant surgeons and the support team in two operating theatres (live donor) with post recovery activities.

A close friend got liver transplanted here and it took 10 hours. Surgeons were all from india btw. The good sort.

By law no money can change hands for organs. You also cannot trade for other consideration - ie special treatment or arrangements. These are offences under the Act. Any person who opts out from donating under the Act will immediately lose priority in the event that person requires an organ. Hospitals cannot charge a penny for the organs if the above does not make sense.

The other option is to discuss with The Department of Forensic Science, near to Outram Road.
