If you have a time machine and travel back to ancient China, you will not be able to communicate with them at all.

Mandarin is a northern tongue. In fact, when the republic of china was newly formed, a committee voted for it to be the national language...

The southern sichuan dialect narrowly lost by 1 vote.. or else we will be speaking like this now

What is the big deal? As time changes, language changes according to the people changing - words, pronunciation, usage, meaning, etc.

English too underwent much changes and most people today would have difficult time understanding old Shakespeare English. The words 'gay' or 'pussy' we know now has completely different meanings to what the people of 50 years ago would had understood or imputed.

BTW, TS, it should not be why ancient Chinese sound like Thai, but why Thai sound like ancient Chinese. A big part of thai culture and language were influenced by Chinese culture and language because the area that is now official Thailand had seen much influxes of Chinese immigrants in the last thousand years, especially those from southern China. Indeed, Thailand, throughout its history has been, on and off, a vassal state of different Chinese dynasties and kingdoms. Inter marriages and the mixing of immigrants to and fro are inevitable. Indeed the Thai language shares many common words as some Chinese dialects, especially Hokkien. Whether the usage of these common words will remain in the years to come, no body knows, as this depends on Chinese thai interaction, language usages, practices, changing contexts, meaning, etc.

The northerners have always dominated their southern brethren. This is also the same even for India and Europe.

In fact, there are only 3 instances in chinese recorded history that south conquered the north and brought dynastic change.

Sun Yat Sun was SOUTHERNER Cantonese....... ( or was he Hakka?)

Wikipedia - Sun Yat-sen was born on 12 November 1866.[2] His birthplace was the village of Cuiheng, Xiangshan County (now Zhongshan City), Guangdong Province.[2] He had a cultural background of Hakka[10] and Cantonese. After finishing primary education, he moved to Honolulu in the Kingdom of Hawaii, where he lived a comfortable life of modest wealth supported by his elder brother Sun Mei.

He was a Hakka...s bloody good for nothing that cause the rise of the warlords n promoted the rise of communism..Hakkas n Hokkeins are real scum

I am not sure about the hakka part, but I agree with you on the part that Sun Yat Sen is a bloody useless prick. He is only symbolic for the revolution but is really useless in bringing China to Democracy.

The Cantonese call him a heroic man but not a great man....and true he is not perfect and no one is,,but there are 2 things I have my beef with him,,firstly he could have done better, and lastly the worse thing he ever did was to marry his wife,,,that Soong women who was a true blooded communist...she was instrumental in the rise of the CCP,,,,what a witch and one of the worse in Chinese history.

I am not sure about the hakka part, but I agree with you on the part that Sun Yat Sen is a bloody useless prick. He is only symbolic for the revolution but is really useless in bringing China to Democracy.

In my opinion, the modern Japanese, i.e. the:
wikipedia.org/wiki/Yamato_people
are Chinese too (the first groups migrated to Japan possibly during the ancient Zhou dynasty), and although they are still far from perfect, they are still the only group of East Asians who have best managed to preserve ancient (especially Tang dynasty) Chinese culture, which is why I look up to them a lot, even though they are not perfect.
Just comparing the manners/mannerisms alone of the average Japanese man/woman with the average Chinese man/woman is more than enough proof, in my opinion. :o
And no other East Asian nation even comes close. :o

hakka were refugees escaping war and famine in the north mah. they set up makeshift fortresses (tulou) 土楼 in the south and ended up living there for centuries. many of the tulou fortresses are still around. can go visit and check them out.
