A homeowner in southwest China caused a safety scare after he dismantled the walls between six adjacent flats that he owned to make them into a single loft-style apartment, local media reported.

A neigbhour complained to the Chengdu Economic Daily in Sichuan province that she saw window panes falling out of the building and went upstairs to investigate, only to find the walls between three adjoining flats already removed.

The owner explained that he liked the residential area but by the time he bought his flats there were no large ones left.

He then bought six small flats on the same floor to convert them into one large apartment with a living room of 70-80 square metres, a 30 square metre study and two 20 square metre bedrooms with the remaining space for bathrooms and a kitchen.

The property management company said it could not intervene because the renovations had not damaged any load-bearing walls, endangered public safety or violated others’ rights.

It also said it believed the Chengdu housing authority had inspected and approved the construction work, so the owner was entitled to renovate the flats as he liked.

To avoid further aggravating the neighbours, the owner put the renovations on hold until he received a copy of the official inspection report.

this is why any country in the world is better than shittypore.can u imagine knocking 6 hdb flats into one?even if u had 20 million dollars u couldnt do it cause sinkapore is a gayass country where everyone lives in pigeonholes and lives life in boxes.

imagine walking out of your 6000 sqft hdb flat every morning and sing "rise and shine peasants!!" while all the peasant grandmas and aunties and maids waitby the void deck to send little peasant kids to school,so mommy and daddy can go to their working class peasant jobs and one day their kids can follow in their footsteps.

You are allowed to do the same with HDB apartments. My friend did exactly that.... he demolished the wall between the two units that he owned.

If you own a 3 room flat and below you can buy over the adjoining unit. You can hack down the walls to join the flats or just make a door.

As to owning more than one hdb flat.....Muslims with more than 1 wife can. Religious Discrimination?

Maybe parent's own one unit next to his friend.

First one was from HDB. When the unit next to his was up for sale on the open market he bought it and combined two into one.

Any Sinkie worth his salt will know how to get around HDB ownership rules.

Really??? As far as yonks ago you had to give up on one in order to own another, notwithstanding if it was bought on the open market.

Anyway I am not a Sinkie worth his salt, especially a peasant one who knows HDB rules.

Be thankful you are somewhat unsinkified.
It's amazing how even illiterate sinkies knows all the hdb rules and regulations....including loopholes....because their hdb flat is a money making tool.

He registered the flat in the name of his son and daughter-in-law.

Aiyo even HDB did it themself. Last time Woodlands flats not popular have many left overs for long time so HDB knocked down 4 and 3 room flats to combine them into super big flats. You all forget already? I think they call it Jumbo Flats.

You're obviously of peasant stock because you have a peasant mentality.

When someone "owns" something in this day and age it does not mean the item is registered to them.

The best example is our late hon LKY. He owned the whole of Singapore plus all the GLCs but if you went through the paperwork, you wouldn't find his name anywhere.

Ownership means it is at your disposal according to your whims and fancies.

Aya we are talking about HDB and their policies, of course I know what you are talking about that is why I can own a hdb flat within mop and still hold other private properties, no need you to tell me about property ownership.

Why would anyone buy 2 or more HDB units to make a larger unit:confused:
It would make more sense to do so in property you actually owned. I knew someone living in Toh Tuck who bought 2 semi detached freehold properties. These buildings were next to each other. They made a hole between the 2 semi D dwellings & voila they had one bigger home.

If you have a HDB units it would be more practical to rent out. The beauty of HDB units is that they are the cheapest dwellings in Spore. You could make more $$$ by renting each unit to 20 or more PRC chinese or indians FT.

It's a Malay thing. To them the HDB is their Kampong. They are not interested in the potential rent. They like the idea of an extended family all living under one roof.

They may end up poorer than a money faced chink who measures everything in monetary terms but I sincerely believe that most live far happier lives.
