Police officer shot at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital

PUBLISHED: 10:36 PM, JUNE 20, 2015

SINGAPORE - A police officer was shot this evening (June 20) at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital.

TODAY understands that an accused who was being escorted at the hospital, began to attack one of the officers when his colleague was away.

The accused first took hold of the officer's baton and used it to beat him to the ground, before snatching his revolver and then discharging three rounds.

The police also issued a statement confirming the incident:

"Police confirm that shots were fired at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH) on 20 June 2015 at about 7.05pm.

Police had escorted a 24-year-old Singaporean man who had been arrested earlier to KTPH to seek medical attention after he complained of chest pains. While inside a private room in the hospital, the man attempted to escape and struggled with the officer during which shots were fired. He was swiftly brought under control and remains in police custody. The situation is under control and members of the public were not in any danger at any time.

The accused sustained superficial injuries, while the 31-year-old officer sustained gunshot wounds to his thumb and foot. His condition is stable. Police investigations are on-going."

How can you lose your service revolver so easily? The holster has a thumb break retention system. Must have been too complacent and asleep. Bloody useless poodle should count himself lucky to not have his head blown off.

The reports says "shots" were fired, luckily it was not in the common area, where it is divided by curtains only, or the bullets , will ricochet, not only hands gets injured....shoot any parts...A&E patients, go immediately!!

In NZ, regular policemen are not armed with sidearms. Only the 'ARMED OFFENDERS SQUAD" are armed to deal with armed assailants when called (like SWAT).

In the Khoo Teck Puat Hospital; the policeman would have been exercising GREAT RESTRAIN like the Little India Riots. Lucky for him the police issued gun he was using probably had little STOPPING POWER, a real gun like a MAGNUM357 would have shattered his hand and hit another person.

The problem with arming ALL policemen in Singapore is they don't know how to safeguard their weapons or decide when is the correct time to use them:

1. Unarmed people driving cars failing to stop at police checkpoints end up getting shot dead. (Shangri La Hotel incident)
2. Regular SG policemen being poor marksmen may hit by-standers in any gunfire exchange
3. Greenhorn policemen may have their guns stolen by people they are escorting.
4. When threatened they rather hide in ambulances then fire their weapons against rioters armed with broken bottles and molotov cocktails (Little India Riots)
