The ridiculous terms of my bail

What is the purpose of the terms of a bail? It is to ensure that one attends court. Which so far, I have quite obediently complied to. But how I am going to be punished in lieu of the terms of the bail, has absolutely nothing to do with my presence in court, but the added uncanny conditions that were placed.

In addition to showing up to court, the conditions of my bail are:

Not to post, upload, or otherwise distribute any comment or content, whether directly or indirectly, to any social media or online service or website, while the current case is ongoing.
To meet IO Jason Chua every morning at 9am in Bedok Police Station.
And if I breach, anyone of those bail conditions. My bailor loses $20000, and I have to be sent to remand until after the trial has ended.

I heard that in the case of a simple theft, when one has pleaded guilty, it takes 3 months for them to attain their sentence. In my case, since I am going to trial, and also the fact that how I’ve attained my charges is quite unique, especially the charge concerning obscene imagery, which I found out, I am the first person ever in Singapore to be charged for that. Everything is probably going to take much longer…Let’s estimate say… about 8 months.

So technically, they are saying that if I do not meet Jason Chua for 1 morning, I deserve to be sentenced for 8 months in prison and be fined $20000.

So not meeting Jason Chua can have a punishment more serious than that of a robbery.

Every morning during weekdays, at around 7:30am, hundreds of thousands of Singaporeans stand up and recite the national pledge, and say the 2 lines ‘to build a democratic society, based on justice and equality’

And now. Wow… god fucking damn, I’m really feelin that ‘Justice and equality’…

I’d always wonder, why in the world of all the police stations that were nearby, Serangoon, Ang Mo Kio, it was Bedok police station that had to detain me. And the reason that I’m leaning towards is because it was fucking far, because it would take me time and money to go there. The bail condition of meeting IO Jason Chua was specifically designed to piss me off

So now everyday I have to take 6 stops on the circle line to Paya Lebar, 3 stops to Bedok, and wait 5 minutes for the bus ride, 5 minutes for the bus journey, 3 minutes to walk there and wait an additional 15 minutes because the OC (Officer-In-Charge, this is in line with our nation’s fetish for abbreviations) is always fucking late (Such a great role model). Just to circle and sign a paper that says ‘Have I posted anything online Yes/No’ and then take the 40 minute ride back home.

The judge and the prosecutor, feels that that this is an effective way to mitigate the situation, and prevent me from posting online, by wasting around 2 hours every day, meeting IO Jason Chua. Wow…

Well… with all due respect, fuck you prosecutor, fuck you judge, and fuck you, IO Jason Chua.

I am past 60 and I am very proud of you, Amos. I wish I had the guts you have to take on the BIG BULLIES. You are being denied of one of the basic fundamental rights; free speech. The bail conditions are absurd and you should not be in jail. It is not a good reflection of the legal system.
The legal system created by L*Y is designed to punish anyone who stand against P-ah-P. Great freedom fighters like Nelson Mandela and Martin L King would be proud of you.
With the next election coming up, P-ah-P will do anything and everything to show Singaporeans that you cannot mess with them.
The Amos saga has been very badly handled by the legal process. For those of you who still criticize Amos, I ask that you think about your won freedom of speech; ask yourselves if you want P-ah-P to continue telling you how you should live, eat and sleep.

Amos has guts and courage. He is also intelligent and using tactics such as going to Court in pyjamas. He prefers jail to agreeing to unacceptable terms of his bail.
He is showing the world that he prefers to accept punishment. The World Press is watching and hence there is not much Spore can do. The hard-won reputation of Spore cannot be ruined by overly punishing Amos.
Already he has spent more days in prison than many who committed lesser crimes.
A detention centre not a prison would have been a better place for juveniles who have not been convicted. Also why delay the trial for so long?
There is a need to review the procedures. If a Court can be convened even on a public holiday just to charge someone, then the Court can also proceed with the trial where a bailor is not found.

If you read Amos Yee’s blog posts, you will see he is very articulate, much more so than many of our Ministers. He expresses his ideas very well. You may not agree with his delivery, but you cannot fault his passion and talents. Truly he is born in the wrong country. A mature country will harness that energy and talent and channel it to champion the good of society. I guess in Singapore, PAP won’t do that because they are afraid these are the very talents that will expose PAP’s weaknesses.

Amos Yee: Not just a rebellious teen

MAY 6, 2015 BY ONLINECITIZEN IN LETTERS · 5 COMMENTS

Reading the article where TOC interviews his bailor Mr. Vincent Law has really given me an insight on who Amos Yee is as a person.

When Amos was taken back into remand, I had assumed 2 things. Either Vincent Law does not have the $30,000 to front or Vincent Law offered $30,000 to the front and Amos Yee declined his proposal.

Needless to say, I was glad it was the later.

A lot of people are under the impression that Amos Yee just a young angry teen full of angst, rebellion and lacking in empathy.

If he truly was lacking in empathy, He would have taken the offer by Mr. Law and squandered it by breaking the terms of the bail a second time, yet he chose not too.

He understands the injustice of Act 377A in Singapore that criminalizes male homosexuality and empathizes with their fight to get this law repealed, it serves no purpose in a civil society and no amount of slippery slope fallacies used by the ruling governing body can ever justify this blatant discrimination.

His less than subtle, humourous and sarcastic commentary on the Little India Riot shows maturity and understanding of situations while being balanced and constructive. It is also a sign of a green and thriving mind that is well beyond its years.

The only fault of his youth is that it’s not given him the tactical understanding of how to work around the system.

In the shared conversation with Mr Law, where he confronted Amos about his religious beliefs, Amos yet again shows a wisdom that is well beyond his age, Yes, we can take issues with religious doctrines, we can criticize them and we can disagree with them but that doesn’t mean we have an issue with the religious just because we’re atheists.

Amos Yee has truly shown true strength in his character. His unrelenting desire to not conform or compromise. His maturity in responding to “Cookie Tan” the man who openly made his desire to maim the genitals of a teenage boy then stuffing said member into the child’s mouth public. Choosing to remain in remand over risking someone else’s money. His ability to articulate his thoughts into material.

Admirable traits in someone so young.

Since day one of this saga, it has been refreshing to see how one Singaporean teenager has been so brazen and defiant in standing up for his freedom of speech, I only wish more of us have the tenacity of Amos Yee.

And I hope at the end of this saga Amos comes out unbowed unbent and unbroken.

Peace!

“If someone tells me that I’ve hurt their feelings, I’m still waiting to hear what your point is” – Christopher Hitchens.

I wish Amos Yee had to report to some police station near Tuas everyday. That would teach him to be so rude to Ah Gong!
