Are you smart enough to retire?

Because life is short. Yesterday just attended the funeral of one who had bent his knees for 30 over years. Recently, he was very happy to get extended after 62. He was from rich family and kids are studying in uk. He doesn't need the pay to support his family. But just one heart attack and everything is gone. Perhaps he didn't realise at it is very stressful mentally to bend knees.
How old r u and how much passive income you get per month?
I can only say that I have yet to hit the official retirement age with negligible passive income. Only reason I dare do it is I downgraded my lifestyle, has zero debt and no dependent to take care.

Yes working a few hours or 'flexible time' should be the way to keep our sanity after retirement. Many ex-colleagues pass away after retirement. They were at a lost with no routine to follow. However, I think a possible killer is that they get depressed when they suddenly find themselves all alone. No subordinate to perform mundane chores or people to order about. Their circle of "friends" shrunk as those who stuck around him because of his official position will disappear. It is only then that they realize who are the true friends.

I can't think of anything worse than a routine. It kills creativity and drive.
Less than 1 m in liquid assets. I avoid spending in sg. Instead, make a few trips each year to enjoy cheap good food elsewhere like bkk. Pamper myself once a year with a longer trip. It is much cheaper as i can chose to travel during off peak season However, body now having problem with long flight. I limit my expenses so that it will not eat into my sayings by more than 20k per year. Therefore if my initial saving is said 800 k, it should last about 40 years. (recent inflation had badly affected my buffer) By then, if I am still alive, I plan to surrender my insurance policies.
The only nightmare is medical cost. Should I be hit by any serious illness, I pray that it will not be so bad that I will be totally incapacitated to decide on whether to seek treatment. I don't believe in treatment for terminal cases. Which is why I have become very sensitive to changes in my body system. Sorry to sound brave. I am just eccentric in a certain way.
Smartness is not always a blessing. Two smart guys, Steve Job and Bill Gates are the best contrasting examples. Undeniably both are super smart. One is gone and the other is still around enjoying life. So there is something more important than smart. It is the understanding of what life is all about and more importantly, the ability to "let go". It is harder for smart people to let go because there is so much to lose. So they cling on to their possession and status realizing that it is kind of foolish only when it is too late.Absolutely agree, I am with you on this.
Based upon what I read in Job's biography, he was a minimalist. He certainly wasn't one to accumulate earthly possessions.
One thing you should learn is to let go. One example would be this thread. Another was the "tray return saga" which made you look like a fool.

Well I am at my early 30. Retire too early then nothing to do.
You misunderstand the term "retirement".
Retirement doesn't mean doing nothing. It means gaining financial independence so you no longer have to depend on a job to pay the bills.
You can then work hard at what you enjoy doing rather than slogging away at what you are paid to do in order to sustain your lifestyle.
Don't you have any hobbies, interests, passions, goals and dreams?
