Expect many JB retail shops and eateries to fail in 2-3 months' after SG has matched JB tolls, which is likely to be in 1-2 weeks' time.

SG is waiting for a little while because they are expecting that MY may change the toll charges anytime soon due to political pressure, as quickly as they implement it.
If 3 weeks still no change, than they implement accordingly. Actually SG is more than happy to increase the toll, higher the toll, more revenue collected and best of all, easy money. Singaporean can choose not to go to JB but SPR must go home to JB.

Since SG is building the NS Expressway, maybe we should also increase all motor-cycles toll to pay for it? Since they will be major users of NS Expressway. Does that sound logical to you?

Actually the motorcycles are the main pollutant and create road hazards when they anyhow ride. Should charge the foreign motorcycles more.

Excellent! For so long we businesses in Singapore have lost at least 30-50% of our currencies to businesses in JB. We charge S$3 they charge RM 4 end up our cilents flock there. Its pay-back time

I wonder if today will have another strike or not?
Looks like the govt is very stiff about maintaining the toll charges.

Wonder if the shopping malls are crowded with shoppers during the weekend. Anyone knows? Singaporeans can still visit JB by bus without having to paying the hike in toll fees! But it would be a chore to carry things bought across the checkpoints!

they make you walk a big round just to exit the custom. i cant remember was it at jb side or wlds side.
we could see the custom thru a glass panel but just had to walk around it which was really unnecessary and ridiculous. since then my wife told me no way is she going by bus. and yes, u r right, the shopping bags will surely kill you.

Some say they would, but come to think of it, the key to any variation lies with the JB administrators. Had they not acted on sentiments, the only affected parties would be the foreign vehicles coming into Singapore at specific times. The solution to this is to pass on the increase to consumers in due course and none will be worse off as we are all use to price increase as time goes by. But the reality is they acted on sentiments and shouted out loud that they would impose VEP fees against Singapore vehicles. Some smart aleck of EDL took the cue and increase the toll charges making it harder for the VEP fees to be imposed....I wonder whether or not the Transport Ministry is calculating the VEP fees and DPM and his men are reviewing the hike. Any views?

Yesterday, DAP urged Datuk Seri Najib Razak to defer the astronomical toll hike at the Johor Causeway pending a proper public consultation.
Its parliamentary leader, Lim Kit Siang, said the toll hike of 480% was probably the highest increase in Malaysian history and was implemented less than a week after it was announced on July 26.
Umno lawmaker Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed was among those who had criticised the toll hike and called for it to be postponed pending further analysis.
"I don't understand the rationale for the toll hike that is clearly going to burden the people in Johor who work in Singapore, when they still have to go through heavy traffic on a daily basis," Nur Jazlan had said.
The Public Accounts Committee chairman added that the rationale that the toll hike was needed to bear the cost of EDL did not make sense.
"EDL is a privatisation project that is supposed to benefit the public and not incur higher toll," he said.
Kluang MP Liew Chin Tong had also said the new rates were a heavy blow to Malaysians who commute daily to the island republic for work and that many may opt to use motorbikes as an option, which would lead to more road accidents and deaths.
"All these hardships are imposed because the cronies have to be paid for the highway and other projects they built.
"It is totally unacceptable," Liew had said. – August 3, 2014.

Haha yes yes......I am just using an analogy to highlight how ridiculous this is. The cronies know that the toll they have set for the EDL is far too high, and no 1 will pay, hence the proposal to locate it in the customs. If EDL toll is like RM 3, of course many pple will still be willing to pay for it.

Yes, you walk one big round going to JB and again one big round coming back to SG.
Their planners were really not very smart and worse, not keen to make any improvement to this absolutely stupid layout at all.
But then after all, they are not the ones affected, just the poor bus commuters.

Both checkpoints seem quite ok at 610 pm. The tolls & VEH seem to have worked wonders. When SG matches MY toll at Woodlands side, we will have a better idea of the traffic situation. My JB colleague has given up and used car pooling starting this week.......

If and when the SG cars VEH is implemented & LTA matches the MY VEH by implementing a tit-for-tat on MY cars, the causeway will be even smoother, but at the detriment to businesses & consumers.

Seriously it DOESNT affect me a bit as I am so used to paying for Tuas for 10 years

I saw a 10-20% increase in cars in Singapore. Weekends in Singapore was supposed to be jam-free but yesterday I felt the stress of weekdays

I am not going JB for short trips anymore. Will go in only when absolutely necessary.
[/QUOTE]

You should switch to Woodlands causeway for now as it is now jam-free and still cheaper than Tuas side until LTA matches it up on Singapore side.

at last someone in msia suggested to authorities to find ways to allow for an alternative for people to walk across the causeway.
the word is alternative. it has been evading all of us almost all of our lives.
cant walk across
can ferry across
can even really cycle across smoothly and safely
cant really train across because of fixed times.

so this walking across really should make it happen.
it saves peoples money.
it could be faster.
its scenic at times
its peaceful and leisurely

but tolong, dont make people walk along that F1 stretch.

Of course it will affect lah, when the mass crowd living in Bukit Indah, Sutera Utama, Perling and Tun Aminah starts switching over to Tuas instead of Woodlands previously. That said, it seems like the S$15 VEH has worked wonders. If and when the RM 50 levy on SG cars is implemented, it will work even greater wonders.

somehow i suspect those living in jb even semi-permanently are considering the new tolls a blessing in disguise! no more jams is good.

I think it is good for people who really want to retire there.

With less human traffic, there will be less Jam. The activity will be lesser as a whole for JB. The rental and cost of living will be lowered because of lesser demand
It will be much safer as a whole as if there is a bomb explosion in the midst of Jam in causeway and CIQ.

That will be disastrous for Singapore !

I think the Singaporeans and PR PMET are secretly loving it for now, till the SG VEH of RM 50 is implemented come early next yr.....A lot of the Malaysians have given up and taken to buses or car pooling...... Rare to see such a clear causeway at this time. Haha....
