Japan to establish island military posts

To protect her own interests and territory in the midst of growing PRC assertiveness, it is apparent that Japan has both the will and the ability to proceed with concrete steps to put into action. In my view, the Senkakus by some error of the yanks at the end of WW2 now belongs to Nippon. Whilst China has made claims to these islands recently and even made physical incursions, Japan has not remained idle to this. Abe looks strongly determined to face China in every move.

I think the Pacific side of Asia might be in for some turbulence.

Cheers!

Japan to establish island military posts

May 19, 2014 8:18 pm

TOKYO: Japan is to establish new military outposts on remote islands, a report said Monday, as Tokyo looks to bolster its defence amid a territorial dispute with China.
Up to 350 troops each could be stationed on three islands in the far southwest, close to the Senkakus, which Beijing claims as its own under the name Diaoyus, the mass-selling Yomiuri Shimbun reported.
With the exception of the main Okinawa island, Japan’s Ground Self-Defense Forces — its army — have no bases on the chain of islands that runs from the bottom of Kyushu to Taiwan. There are limited air force facilities in the area.
The lack of substantial military presence is a source of worry for some in Japan, who caution that it leaves Japan vulnerable to China’s increasingly assertive stance.
Chinese ships have repeatedly moved into the Senkakus’ territorial waters, since Tokyo nationalized some of them in September 2012, to confront Japanese vessels.
The islands lie around 2,000 kilometers (1,250 miles) southwest of Tokyo and around 200 kilometers from the north of Taiwan.
While most of the bickering has been between coastguards from both sides, observers say military ships are loitering over the horizon, with some warning of the risk of a confrontation.
Beijing has spent heavily on its military in recent years in a bid to develop a “blue water” navy that can project force far out into the Pacific.
This means getting through what it calls the “first island chain” including Japan’s southwestern islands and the northern Philippines.
Tokyo is now planning to set up new outposts on three islands, including Amamioshima, some 150 kilometers (93 miles) south of the Senkakus, the Yomiuri said, citing unnamed senior defense ministry officials.
Deputy defense minister Ryota Takeda will visit Amamioshima this week to look at establishing a joint research project with the island, it said.
Two other candidate sites for the new posts include Miyako island and Ishigaki island, some 210 kilometers southwest and 170 kilometers south, respectively, of the disputed islets.
These units are to be in ad–dition to a radar surveillance unit on Yonaguni, where a ground–breaking ceremony was held last month.
Bolstering the defense of Japan’s southwestern islands “has an aspect of strengthening the Japan-US security alliance,” a senior defense official told the Yomiuri.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said under a new defense program, Japan had already decided to enhance the military presense in the southwest and had been conducting research.
“At the moment, however, we have not decided on specific, concrete locations such as those reported,” he told a regular press conference.
The report came just two days after the Japanese and Chinese trade ministers held talks in the first high-level meeting since Japan’s Prime Minister Abe visited the controversial Yasukuni war shrine in December.
China is also locked in separate territorial disputes with Southeast Asian neighbors, including Vietnam where the row has recently flared into deadly riots, and the Philippines.

The island are much nearer to china than Japan. Any conflicts there will be by air. Any military presence on the islands will be treated as a threat by Beijing. Abe better think properly as such as will also view with suspicion by the Koreans.

PLA will be willing to trade lives and materials for those islands. What PLA lack now is an excuse. 出師有名 very important to Chinese war strategy.

I wonder why china suddenly assertive to claim these islands. Seems like they suddenly has decided to make war with just about all the neighbours.
there are maritime laws to adhered. Just 70 years ago, taiwan was not even chinese. It was japanese. And before that, the aborigines who defeated japanese invasion twice since the 16th century.

Simple. Either China claims it or one of USA's bitches will do it: Vietnam, Philippines, Japan, Singapore.

With recent talks from the USA (and its Jewish agents) about fixing Russia and China, the choice is obvious.

It'll be a matter of time before Japan will start to whack the Chinks. Don't play play with Abe. In terms of hardware technology, Japan surely has the upper hand.

In the past, they belonged to China. Then after WW2, the yanks who view Communist China as an adversary, said the islands belonged to Nippon, and then everyone forgot about the islands, till now. The islands are closer to China, but Americans are standing by their buddy the Nips. There's nothing in those islands except rocks and barnacles, but it will be a matter of time before China will be more forceful. I think it will be purely for nationalistic reasons. Obama is hoping to delay this fuse and likely hoping it will come after his term as pres. Let the next US pres sweat over it.

Cheers!

China has a lot of lost land to reclaim since the decline of the Ching Dynasty. They did not have the bargaining chips like they are have gained now. Economic development and cooperation takes precedence over other issues for the time being. Eventually some time down the road, they will have to face off against USA for Taiwan and even the Russians for the land around Vladivostok. They are in no hurry. It is anybody's guess what the PRC will be like a generation from now.

Cheers!

There is a lot of potential for conflicts, but somehow I get the feeling that China may be magnanimous and overlook some of her past territories to foster good relations for the future. Nobody wants war anymore.

Tell me which country presently endorses what the Chinks are doing on claiming those sea territories? Practically no. Even the Russians don't say a word about it. NK even couldn't be bothered.

An epidemic of a large scale to wipe out half the population of Ah Tiong land will be the best solution to avert a war in this part of the world.

Both Chinese and Japs will eagerly cheong to fight if pushed, but I think, and hope that their leaders will take a middle ground and work together to ease out any problems. Japan for now may have the technical edge, but China is a much bigger bloke to fight with. Blow for blow, it is unlikely the bigger bloke will be knocked out.

Cheers!

None of them is willing to forgo the islets being disputed. How not to have war? The only way is for 1 of them to suffer heavy infrastructural damage before they will eat the humble pie. For me, I am for China to suffer that fate, so that we can also have a more peaceful South China Sea.

Yes, Gas this male Ah Tiong to death.

But leave all the Chio At tiong Bu alone. They will be all alone in this World if their China Male counterpart die out as a result of this extermination policy.

That is easier said than done. Big and/or stable countries will not want to risk a nuclear retaliation. USSR and USA were very close to bombing each other in the last century but refrained due to MAD (mutually assured destruction.)Any nuclear threat will more likely come from smaller terrorist groups with access to the weapon.

Cheers!

Who in their right mind will be willing to send men to die for a couple of pieces of rocks in the seas? Both countries have suffered badly in the not-too-distant past and will avoid being in a dire situation again. If there is any demand from either side, I predict we will see more a war or words than missiles.

Cheers!

I think there's more to that than a couple of rocks. It's "saving of face", national pride and national patriotism.

None of the big countries will back up China in these or other endeavours. China is on their own and will be determined to prove to the world she is just as capable as the other leading nations (USA and Russia). This is why they are so ambitious in their space program when the rest of the world left them out of the ISS (International Space Station). If anything is capable of wiping out Ah Tiong land, it will be the pollution caused by their massive industrialization process.

They don't need or care for anyone's endorsement. They're going ahead with whatever they need to get done. The question is - who is going to stop them?

Cheers!

For the time, they are riding high on nationalistic emotions. They can be said to be "intruding" onto others' territory (eg. Vietnam, Phillipines) and it is other nations' who might want to save their own face. When all this hoohah settles down, they will have to tackle domestic issues like the widening income gap, inflation, pollution, rural poverty, corruption, and a whole host of other problems.

Cheers!
