Same as SAF, we have 300,000 NSFs which are reluctant conscripted soldiers, cheap slavery.

It is a asset to the govt but a liability to the nation lor

In Singapore's case, it is neither an asset nor liability, just unnecessary. Firstly, you do not want your policepersonnel to be underarmed compared to adversaries, but in Peesai's case, the pai kia are usually unarmed or equipped only with some kitchen knives or boxcutters. Police constables carrying batons will suffice. SWAT teams armed with smoke bombs and assault rifles only when needed. Riot police should be equipped with rubber bullets or tasers, same for traffic cops.

they should try out the British system. Only a special force armed. The rest of the police dont carry fire arms.

Quite true. Those born in the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s all played in the streets and became terror in their own turfs. No computer games, no ipad, ipods; hobbies were flying kites, catching spiders, chasing after longkang fish, fighting in the streets, playing marbles, etc. Nowadays, those joining the SPF did not know the tough life to become an effective fighting force.

Basically, if you are armed to enforce law and order, fire your weapons if need be to maintain peace. If you are afraid to use it, just resign.

The incident at the Woodlands Check Point involving the fleeing Mercedes is a justifiable occasion to fire warning shots but none of them did it. What a shame. Monkeys see, monkeys do. That old uncle probably assessed the weakness of the SPF to make a run for it. If they could do nothing to let ah nehs burn their vehicles, what could they do to stop him? Unlikely to fire at him. So, he just chiong and he was proven right.

Those top level officers at SPF, ICA, Customs, etc should all go for re-training to be effective, gung-ho and fearless in discharging their duties. If you are afraid to kill or be killed, just resign. Law enforcement is not for weakling. No wonder LKY chose Gurkhas to protect him.

Being gung ho and fearless cannot be trained. Recruitment personnel need to change their focus. Academic qualification useful for those doing paperwork.
