My apologies , I mis-read another post and got distracted.
What we are looking at are armed and trained professional policemen paid to do their jobs, and they pulled out upon meeting a mob of drunk unruly Ah Neh on their off day. The police did not do their duty to uphold law and order for more than an hour, in the face of a large Indian mob, they ran away and surrendered the field to the mob. They gathered at one side and awaited reinforcements, allowing the mob full control of the entire street. And the assembled policemen stood at one side and watched using eyepower, or what the mainstream media claim to be, maximum restraint, while rioters burned police cars and ambulances. It is an entirely plausible explanation every single policeman on the scene just stood there and gaped at the first riot in forty years, and that's how maximum restraint without firing a shot was achieved.
Any claims of a lack of riot gear is bullshit, a riot shield is standard issue. I'm sick and tired of the main stream media and some others claiming how brave were the men in blue when there is video evidence that the police ran like dogs. Giving stupid excuses like, the first responders could not charge the rioters as they might steal the guns the police carried. The guns are carried at their belt and there are anti-snatch proof. They held back and refused to take on the rioters, simple as that.
Firing a warning shot is well within the right to prevent rioters from burning their cars, thanks to their 'restraint' or lack of action, Singapore looks like a war zone. Desperate times calls for desperate measures, we cannot follow the SOP to the dot. Kudos to the SCDF fire truck driver who managed to rescue his vehicle from the rioters by possessing rare initiative.
And to whoever who tell us about their brave friend/family/spouse who sacrifice their family time by being on standby on a Sunday night. All I can say is BIG FUCKING DEAL! Suddenly, an entitlement to tell us about how brave the police are just because someone they knew went on standby.

Let's not forget also that there are civilians (and not just rioters) on the scene so law enforcement agents there are also responsible for the safety of these civilians and if they have to run, they should help them evacuate the scene as well.

Now the facts: IMHO, it was a great achievement. They fled because the situation was grave and to save lives, both sides. Perhaps they were instructed NOT to fire any arms.
It was never LUCK in such a situation. It was quick thinking when you assessed the volatile and life-threatening situation. You knew you were out-numbered. You knew the situation was grave. You knew you were surrounded. So what if you wanted to use your fire power and shoot the rioters. How many could you injure and how many could you kill? The situation would certainly turn worse and there would be more fatalities,more injuries and more damages. The situation would turn bloody and violent with ugly deaths.
Our policement did the right thing. A very brace thing which I described as gracious and dignified retreat. They did not flee. It was a tactical and strategic retreat. They should be applauded for such quick thinking.
Not a single shot was fired. And the riot burnt itself out within 2 hours. This is world class performance and a model for all law enforcement agencies to emulate. Majulah Singapura!!!
