Ok, I notice we have not had a food thread in this Courtyard Cafe for quite a while.

I come from a family of pure (Swatow) teochews for generations. (Pure meaning, dad and mum, both paternal and maternal grandparents, great grandparents etc. were all teochews).

And you know, the teochews absolutely love taro (yam).

I can eat taro the whole day, seven days a week, and still not sick of it.

I am wondering if Chinese of other dialects, like to eat taro too? How do you cook it?

Here is a picture of teochew "or-ni" to share with you all:

The Teochew restaurant at the basement of The Concourse served fantastic or-ni. They used a fried yam crust to contain the paste.

a dash of pork lard oil with a tinge of fried shallot are normally added into orh ni. this is the original authentic way of eating it.

Yes, my late grandma used to add a little lard to it but not the fried shallots. But nowadays, people are more health conscious and they do without the lard.

With lard, it will look like this, right?

This picture shows a thin layer of lard, and a few pieces of pumpkin.

traditionally tiuchew only ate yam and golden pumpkin. Gingko nuts were added recently and tiuchew are richer now

nowaday Gingko nuts come in 2 version.
version 1: traditional, you have to bring home to crack the shell, very expesnive.
version2: all cracked already,$2 per packet.
still cant understand why version is cheaper than version 1?

Looks very good!

I like to try when I do get back in Singapore from time to time.

Where can I get that?

I prefer the look of the one in post #1 than the one in post #6, which looks very oily.

The or-ni (shown in the picture) is from Swa Garden Teochew Restaurant at Macpherson Road.

Thank you!

When I get back I always for for bak kut teh and teh kar and intestines as no fucking chance of getting that in ME.
I think I add eating oh ni to my list of things to do here, from Swa Garden and BT hawker center too.

I do not care shit about oil. If I do, I will not eat teh kar and intestines and kou rou.

Best steaks are those marbled Kobe steaks, and that fantastic taste from the fat.

I do not have that many years to live.

And I want to eat delicious food.

Deng Hsiao Peng smoked like chimney and drink like fish and eat kou rou and he died a contented old man.

Had a good teochew or-nee tonight at 东海潮州酒家 http://www.eastocean.com.sg/contact.html

The first thing that hits you is the smell of lard or pork oil, that is the key thing that separates the men from the boys, the real stuff from the wannabes, a good teochew or-nee from the copycats

It all started with some meat and a good soup

Double boiled fish maw

braised duck with tofu

salted chicken

geoduck sashimi

cold king crab

bamboo clamp

Steamed sole fish

Braised sea cucumber

Spinach with century and salted eggs
