Apparently, hens can lay eggs even if they did not mate with a rooster. The only difference is that those eggs aren't fertilized, and won't hatch into chicks.

only remember eating raw eggs freshly laid by the old hen in the back yard... still very warm, but nothing unusual after eating it :smile::smile:

They menstruate...mating with that cockerel is a different matter...but they only difference is, one is an unfertilized egg & the other fertilized...is there a difference when you eat them??

Ok, what is different between a hen that has not laid an egg, one that does or even lay fertilized eggs & old hen, never mind the cockerel? The reason I am asking is, during my younger days following my late mother to the market to buy chicken, she would be looking at these characteristics before choosing one to cook & rooster is only good for cooking curries!? The people of her generation will turn the chicken over & examine the rear .... before buying.

So, when are we getting for our chicken these days?, pullet, or old hen? or even old rooster??

Virgin egg is not unfertilized egg but the very first egg laid by the hen. Normally smaller than normal egg and cost cheaper as it is smaller. The last time i brought it from hong mao was less than $4 for a 30 eggs tray. Good for eating soft boiled eggs. As for benefit of eating it, i have no ideas.

I thought all eggs we buy from markets are not fertilized?

Virgin eggs used to be smaller eggs that people don't want, as it is smaller and uneconomical. Then a marketing genius package them as virgin eggs, and people started buying.

markets also got fertilized eggs.......
I think vegetarians eat unfertilized eggs as technically these eggs got 'no life'.

How to examine every egg you buy from the supermarkets?? you going to bring a lamp there, open up the boxes & choose those without an embryo inside. Vegetarians are giving themselves problems, cost of food i already so high & getting higher each day, they going to insist in eating certain kind of eggs, certai kind of vegetables..certain kind of whatever....wouldn't that be simple to eat in faith? afte rall, we eat our food outside in faith, have you sat down & observe how they prepare your food??

You better don't... eat in faith.

If vegans can eat unfertilized eggs because it has "no life", then they should also be able to eat an animal carcass because it has "no life" also.

Simi "no life" logic for eggs:confused:

I think is to check if the chicken has undergone surgery or not, if have, then there may be chemicals in the chicken. Most old gen wants natural village chicken.
