THAILAND - A woman and her daughter moved from Thailand's Surin province to the tourist haven of Pattaya last week.
The mother, 42, was unemployed and the 15-year-old daughter wanted money for shopping and other leisure activities.
So the mother suggested that her daughter become a prostitute, the Bangkok Post reported.
She acted as the pimp and charged clients 2,500 baht (S$100) for the daughter's services.
Both were arrested in a sting operation on Sunday night, the police said.
The duo have not been named.
The mother has been charged with child prostitution.
The teenager said that she voluntarily became a prostitute because she needed money and was not forced into prostitution by her mum.
Police Sub Lieutenant Nithit Krairat said the girl was sent to a child rehabilitation centre.
Meanwhile, in a similar case, Pattaya police also arrested a "coyote" or erotic dancer who allegedly lured her younger sister into working as a prostitute.
Pol Maj Gen Chawalit Sawangpuech, commissioner of the Anti-Human Trafficking Division, said police conducted a sting operation at a hotel in Pattaya, with one of their foreign assistants posing as a client.
Undercover agent
They discovered that the 23-year-old bar dancer was also a mamasan.
The suspect denied the charge, saying that her sister was already in a relationship with the undercover agent and that the money they received was not payment forsex.
Pol Maj Gen Chawalit said the pair charged their customers about 2,500 baht for each service and they accepted only foreign clients.
The younger sister would keep
2,000 baht and her elder sister would take the rest, he added.
Police charged the elder sister with child prostitution.
The offence carries a penalty of six to 12 years in jail and a fine ranging from 120,000 to 240,000 baht.
