INDIA - A man in Kerala, South India, allegedly sold his wife for Rs6,000 (S$138) to finance his drinking habit.
Makkal Osai reported that Medula Rajender, 42, worked as a labourer.
When he was short of cash to buy liquor, he struck a deal with a broker to sell his 36-year-old wife Medula Ammayi last Saturday.
The incident came to light after police received a complaint from the couple's 18-year-old son.
Rajender had dragged his wife to a bus station, telling her to wait for someone there.
Somehow, she managed to get to another village and went to a relative's house where she related her plight.
"I have been married for about 20 years. But I could not imagine even in my wildest dreams that he would do such a thing," she said.
The couple have two other sons aged 12 and 15.
Police said Rajender used to harass Ammayi for money.
