They must know, too, that lower pay will not cultivate loyalty and if they expect employees to maintain medium term relationship to continue serving them. Please wake up from the myth and be realistic too. Don't blam employee for job hopping.

someone once wrote...

Shouldn't the govt, NTUC & employers let the market set the salaries as ours is a free labour market with free flow of foreigners coming in looking for jobs on a daily basis?

Seems like increasing the supply of workers does not work this time with cost of housing shooting through the roofs and prices of basic necessities flying out of the windows.

some yrs back when they decided to stretch the retirement age, they probably had in mind that there should never be retirement for sgporeans. under normal circumstances worldwide (especially 1st world countries), the labor unions enforce minimum wage policies for all levels of qualifications, so to ensure & enhance the social security system.

eg: a graduate (regardless of discipline), could be holding a job of a road builder (aka civil etchnician/engineer) or toilet cleaner (aka environment technician/engineer), bt the union will enforce that he/she holds a remuneration package comparitive to other graduate in the workforce. the union also enforces recommended working hours in a week, so it helps to ensure that more ppl r being employed (with adequate rests), while operations arent compromised for any business owners/ employers.

in doing so, it brings about work-life balance in the households, where ppl can spend quality time at home - family bonding etc, while couples would less likely be too stressed out to skip making babies.

conversely, the union here is telling ppl to stop grumbling n settle for less. be contented if u have a job (bt wat good does it make if both spouses combined income barely make ends meet?) not forgetting employers these days r most happy to hire FTs for less, while FTs r more than happy to put in extra hours at work (a good fraction of them r here alone, they've nothing much to do - as their families r back home n they dont mind putting extra hrs into work)

while cost of living n financial liabilities these days r escalating. should the workforce continue to b numb n contented with the miserable income that doesnt make ends meet. if naturally means, ppl cant really afford necessities. ppl start taking loans from banks left right n center. taking eons to furnish the loans, n when they finally do... they're already in their 50s n 60s. no savings = continue slaving

in many cases when ppl r up n their age while productivity n adaptibility to newer technologies naturally slow down. employers also take the opportunity to slash their remunerations, or even, lay them off. hence, resulting in the aged having to continue slaving for much lesser for a livelihood, till they kick the bucket. regardless how many more new courses that 1 can seek to upgrade, employers will nt hesitate to hire the younger & aspiring freshies, or perhaps the more than willing FTs. (as is, there's already insufficient jobs in the mkt to meet the demands of annual graduants from our local varisities, polytechnics, private colleges, as well as foreign students - who're required to obligated 3yrs of labor upon graduation)

as much as they emphasize so much about wanting to make this a 1st world country.... sad to say ppl r starting to live lives as if, in 3rd world country.

Just last year we have some white scum saying it's golden period. And they increased their paycheck by at least 25%.

Now after a year, they asked not to expect too much. What about their pay? Should it be lower as well?

When they pegged their pay to CEO, did they consider that CEO will also be licking bones when economy is bad? While theirs will be there to stay. It's pure shit logic from those scums.

Time for the govt to end its control of the NTUC and revamp the whole union. NTUC is suppose to help workers fight for better rights and conditions and not be a organization that echo what the govt says and force workers and wage earners to accept the unreasonable conditions.

Singaporeans have a family to think of and to support, but does those FTs have a family here? a house? or a car to support. Nope, all they do is to send what they have earn back home and when they go back they can retire in comfort. How about singaporeans? Work hard to support a flat and feed a family and suddenly one fine day the employer tell you that " sorry your services is not needed in the company" and then what do we do. Listen to what the govt says, upgrade and then in the end nothing in the job market for you. This should not be happening to our fellow citizens, who are born and breed in Singapore and have done the NS.

The PAPPY govt must lose a majority of its parliment seat and force the high paying ministools to understand what is working for the welfare of the people and getting in touch with the ground.

The union died in 1980's, when it was "taken' over, the real comrades leftovers from the 70's and beyond, were either weeded out and many comrades sold their soul to the devil.

The union today is just a mouthpiece & entertainment organization, to say that is serve the wrokers...well!...they do!, if you have the job & money to be served at all the enetertainment & shopping outlets it promotes. You have no money...what kind of an union member, you will be?.

You will notice that when times are bad...they will be the first to call the workers to BITE THE BULLET..and when it is the golden age, they will call the worker, to RESTRAIN for asking more.

In every which way the average Singapore workers turn, THEY LOOSE!, but do they really mind?

When was it when they first asked workers to bite the bullet and take the CPF cuts, with the promise of restoring when times are better? The "golden age" had come and is going (was there a real golden age in the first place?). And now asked to bite again? How much teeth is left with the workers? Dentures can't bite as good

amidst all the hot air n nonsense that the men in white r saying, we need to ask ourselves, who's the 1 that needs to be realistic in times as such, that we're grinding thru. have we not bit the bullet enough, have we not taken the grenade by the teeth once too many?

True. But while many here have realised that we have to take care of ourselves and not hope for handouts, there are many who are not so privileged with education, self-preservation or self-drive and depend on the govt to take care of them as citizens.

My only hope is that the govt does its role responsibly and not nose-lead the ordinary folks into an abyss of hopelessness. They are losing the fight for a better life, and many are doing worse than they have ever done. Folks who had contribute to what the country is today, no matter how small their contribution. Sacrificial lambs in the name of progress, akin to the poor horse in Animal Farm.

They do not have to realize that, the older generation, the ones that come uo from the the 1950's, after WWII, those from the 1960's, after confrontation & m1y 13,, those from the 1970's, after the British withdrew from here, knew, not to rely on the government for handout. Through their, sweat, grit & determination, the built & forge Singapore.

But the 'animals' in 'animal farm', that used to have equal status in building the 'farm, is now, a second class citizen in his or her own, 'farm', loosing out to the flood of foreign workers who jostle with them for survival; furthermore, the constitution of "all animals are equal", had been changed to, "animals are equal, but some animals are more equal".

There many 'poor horses' who will still till the land, work to sustain, what they still belive in, a nation call SINGAPORE, not a political party called SINGAPORE.

And these are the sacrficial lambs...called SINGAPOREANS, or SINGAPORE WORKERS, who are promised a dream, "swiss standard", now maybe "Swede Standard"...

The trade union is nothing but an entertainment organization, and the Singapore workers who are members are just members of some 'counrty club'....they have no sense of belonging, or loyalty or cause!

NTUC is a fraud. It's just another channel for the govt to get 'close' to the citizens, and hoping to pull more votes every GE.

No union, who is fighting for the rights of the employees, should have any links with the existing govt. Besides, NTUC still have to seek consul from the govt before they publish any statement.

NTUC cum employers asking workers be realistic about pay

Oh my, many years ago, when the government pleads for it's case in asking for million dollar salaries, Singaporeans should have asked the ministers to be realistic about pay.

What I heard is, a lot of failed PSC or gahmen scholars ganna channel to NTUC. I have heard of ex-scholars in charge of NTUC singing house membership. WTF scholars 10k a month do membership recruitment, no wonder so many of us no job or underpaid.

NTUC should slim down. If it is overpaying ex-scholars, pls look at current market rate and pay accordingly. If the scholar is fail, pls reject and send back to skool on the scholar's own expense.

Labour Union? what is that? I am not a member and I don't believe members have any say. The Union chief is, himself, an employer chief in disguise and acting on behalf of the governement and not for the workers. Are singaporean workers happy? By the way, the are also affiliated to CASE. I hope future oppositions can win the election to close down all these wayang union and association for good. These are country money wasters.

Did they ever bother to ask the citizens of Spore?

They have a blank cheque to do anything & some silly citizens still support the PAP. Is it any wonder why so many Sporeans are leaving?

Ask the worker to be realistic about the pay, why don't ask the minister with thier 1M pay to lower, if they like to talk so much why don't they show that they are keen to lower thier pay for themself
