aung san suu kyi's golden words of wisdom on humility

"Few people really face the fact that they are going to die one day. If you contemplate your own death, in a sense it means that you accept how unimportant you are. It's a way of stepping back from the present, of the immediate concerns of the world in which you're engaged, realizing just how insignificant you are within the whole scheme of things -- within the swirl of "samsara". And yet you are essential in your place, even if you may not be of great importance. Everybody is essential. But it is a matter of having a balanced view of your place in the world. Having enough respect for yourself to understand that you too have a role to play and at the same time, having enough humility to accept that your role isn't as important as you or some people may think it is."

~ Aung San Suu Kyi

now that aung san is free, what could she do to better the lives of burmese?

personally, i feel she's like our very own auntie lina who appears quite disorientated.

There is one difference. She has the full support of the entire western world. The dire state of Myanmar's economy today was also the outcome of isolation by the West.

Even if she has that support, it is 小巫见大巫 when compared to Aung San Suu Kyi who has worldwide Western support. One promising sign is that ASSK might not be just a puppet of the West. She, in fact, is showing signs that she is willing to compromise with the military. If that is the case, it is going to be good for Myanmar as it can go about the work of rejuvenation instead of continuing with ideological struggle.

her spirit might be willing but her flesh is weak. she doesn't appear healthy and there could be an impending personal health issue :(

My original impression of her was a housewife but after hearing an interview by her, my assessment changed. She appeared to have great conviction and the ability to articulate her ideas, much better than most of our local politicians. If her health can hold, (low sugar problem?), there seems to be some hope for Myanmar as all sides, including outside powers, are willing to put their differences aside to see whether it can work out. With the changing world environment, every opportunity, no matter how minor and long term has to be harnessed and developed. Even western powers can see this and now need it. Aung San Suu Kyi is the excuse.

does everyone seriously think that the west want to free burma? they want to exploit burma's rich resources. the only way to get their hands on that is "to free burma".

That's totally untrue. The two are worlds apart.

If u know Aung San Su Kyi's story, u wouldn't be saying such a thing. How she defied a soldier's order despite having a gun pointed at her. How she has to choose her country above her dying husband and not going to London to see him for a final time for fear that the military junta would not allow her back to Myanmar, We're talking about someone who risked her life and her family and went through so much hardships and suffering to bring democracy to Myanmar. Her father Aung San, Burma's hero who helped the country gained independence was killed by the military when she was only 3.

Lina Chiam on the other hand is only a housewife who stood for election riding on the popularity of her husband to run a small constituency in this small nation. She knows next ato nothing about politics and can't even read the script that are prepared for her. Aung San Su Kyi on the other hand had to meet world leaders and discussed strategies with them on how to break the military junta iron grip.

How could there be any simliarity between the two?

You are new so you are not aware of the resident nutcase of the forum. He caused so much of trouble in this forum, revealed the identities of people in this forum after making friends with them on the the outside. Too a few months to clear his nonsense. He is now being ostracised. He is now starting serious threads to get into the good book of those who are not aware of his past nonsense. Notice he will up his own thread to get attention.

Imagine comparing Lina to one of the most respected political identities in world politics.

If SDP and PAP were to contest in your ward, who will you vote?

before or after the old man?

it's obvious. not many voted for SDP now, not many shall vote for them then. until the day chee cums clean with the voters or a complete change in sdp's leadership, SDP shall remain a controversial political party. voters are not sure whether it's serving their foreign backers or really sincere to better sgporeans' lives.

does chee make it an effort to clear his air of mystery? why hasn't he come clean after so many years and a few GE embarrassing defeats?

if sdp continues in such shadowy manner, though they ve lost now, they shall continue to lose again. perhaps that's how chee can maintain to keep himself in power even though there isn't much progress in sdp after chiam s t.

aung san is a reluctant politician. she was unwittingly being compelled into the political situation she is in now. is this statement true?

I wonder if this post should be considered out of topic. Oh sure LTS doesn't have a good rep here but if he's not actually causing trouble why should his actions in the past be brought up here again for scrutiny? Screw you don't have the authority to make that call.

screwball is a petty bitch. he (or a petty she-btich) doesn't like anyone to overshadow him. if he still has the power to DELETE postings and threads, i shall remain at his little bitchy petty mercy.
