Alan Tam was my favorite in the early 80s. Songs like Aoi De Gen Yuen (Root of Love) and Shei Hor Goi Bien (Who can Change) was really good. After mid 80s, his songs became not so nice especially his attempt on mandarin songs.
Danny Chan and Leslie Chung was also good. After them, Jackie Cheung and has been the undisputed Gor Shen (God of Songs).

All are my favorite. Too pity Beyond die on the peak of their performance.

I can identify one successor to Alan Tam in terms of singing prowess - Hacken Lee. Judge for yourself:

Bro, we all lau kok kok already. Our definition of "Great" is different from the youngsters nowdays. In their opinion, there are still many new Great HK singers. (unfortunately, I have no idea who are the new HK singers)!!

Hehe. Me also like Beyond. That was in the early/mid 90s. Till this day, no HK rock group ever came close.

The other Chinese rock band worth mentioning is Wu Bai and China Blue but it's not Cantonese.

Yes, remember this song. Trap of Love. Remember this song was remixed and remixed at the Rumours Disco and functions. DJ will purposely muted the part Zhe Yam Geng to allow the crowd to sing. Good old 80s.

The same for Thai music. The best are Bird Tong Chai and Sek Loso. Once in a while, the newer group do produce good songs but will be forgotten soon unlike Bird and Loso's songs which seems to last forever. Here's Sek Loso with Bird som sarn:

I disagree. I think this is Bird's trade mark song:

Right, the other Bird trademark song is Prik Ki Noo (Chilli Paddi). This song really changed my life as after listening to this song, I learnt Thai language seriously and the rest is history.

Bird just have to many good songs. Everyone in Thailand loves Thong Chai. There was even a talkshow not too long ago before the elections suggesting Thong Chai can form a politcal party and sure of winning the majority votes.
OK think need to go back to Alan Tam. Felt his decline in popularity is due to producing too many commercialised songs in the late 80s. There are no memorable good songs after the mid 80s. A lot of the songs were covers from Japan. Also he or his producers did not choose the best covers. Jacky Cheung and Andy Lau came with better cover versions.

Hahaha, of course Andy Lau cannot fight the Alan Tam and definitely cannot fight Jacky Cheung. But at least, he has did well in both movies and songs and he did tried to improve his Mandarin.
