The killing marks the fifth fatal attack on members of the Hindu community in separate violent incidents over the past three weeks, raising serious concerns over law and order amid ongoing unrest and protests across the country.
The deceased has been identified as Rana Pratap, 45, son of Tushar Kanti Bairagi, and a resident of Arua village in Keshabpur upazila. According to eyewitnesses and police sources, unidentified assailants opened fire on Pratap while he was present at the market. He sustained multiple bullet injuries and died on the spot.
Following the shooting, chaos gripped the locality, prompting a swift response from Manirampur Police Station personnel, who rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control. Confirming the incident, Officer-in-Charge Rajiullah Khan said preparations were underway to recover the body and conduct a post-mortem examination. An investigation has been initiated to identify and arrest those responsible for the attack.
Series of Recent Attacks
The killing adds to a series of violent incidents involving members of the Hindu community in recent weeks. Earlier, Dipu Chandra Das, a Hindu garment factory worker, was lynched during mob violence. Amrit Mondal, another Hindu man, was also reported killed amid the unrest. In Mymensingh district, Bajendra Biswas was shot dead in a separate incident.
Additionally, Khokon Chandra Das, a Hindu businessman, was stabbed and set on fire by a mob on December 31 near Keurbhanga Bazar in Shariatpur district. He later succumbed to burn injuries at the National Burn Institute in Dhaka.
The latest killing has intensified concerns over the safety of minorities in Bangladesh, as authorities face mounting pressure to restore order and prevent further violence.
