Young crowd at new dbl O

LOVING IT: Sarah-Ann and new friends downing a Flaming Lamborghini.
I HAVE to admit, the thought of going to dbl O made me a little nervous.
I'd heard stories of how, when the club was located at the Mohd Sultan area, patrons would get loaded on the $3++ drinks and get gloriously drunk, pour onto the streets at the end of the night and cause all sorts of problems.
So I didn't even want to imagine what could have gone on inside.
Things were different at the new premises at 222Queen Street, I was told on good authority.
So Sarah-Ann Kwek, Venessa Chua, June Wee - three young women who love their dance clubs - and I approached with a mixture of caution and anticipation.
The entrance was a stunning display of street art. The purple lighting went nicely with our colours - which were totally unplanned - so we posed for shots to the bemusement of staff and patrons.
Then as we made our way in, we saw one female patron being helped out by her friends. Uh oh.
But the inner space was impressive too.

At least, that's how Venessa and June felt.
'I like it that it's so spacious,' said June, who loves to dance. 'I don't like places that are too packed because it becomes so difficult to move around or dance.'
'I like the decor,' said Venessa.
All three were impressed with the graffiti art in the tunnel leading to the interior, as well as the street art at the entrance and the wall at the far end. The street art was done by artists Clog Two and OneTwo Delta.
June loved the big dance area. But she felt the ceiling was too bare and wished there was a podium.
'I like dancing on the podium because I get to see others dancing while showing off my moves,' she admitted.
The club's design didn't go down well with Sarah-Ann. 'I feel a lot more could be done with the decor,' she said.
Perhaps she prefers something a lot more elaborate. I had no quarrel with the space and the thing that caught my eye was the overhead display of mannequins airbrushed by popular local tattoo artist Jap Loh.
Very friendly
While the four of us discussed the decor and door/drinks prices (cover at $20 for ladies and $25 for gents, and standard drinks at $3++ all night), it was the crowd that got us really talking.
Said June: 'It's a really young crowd here. They don't look so stylish but they're very friendly.'
One woman walked up to me and said: 'You're The New Paper guy who writes about parties. But I cannot remember your name.'
I don't blame her. Sometimes, after having had too many, even I forget my name.
Sarah-Ann was invited by a group of guys to partake in a 'Fallen Lamborghini'.
Well, it was in fact a Flaming Lamborghini - that drink which is literally on fire when you dip a straw through the flames on the surface and hope you do not torch your throat as you suck up the contents.
'I have to give it to them. The staff really made the effort to stack up the glasses to make the drink,' said Sarah-Ann.
Indeed, the crowd, young and a tad unsophisticated but really quite friendly, made our day.
But the highlight of the evening was from a very unlikely character.
'There was this guy who looked really old. He was grinding to everything - the furniture, the DJ console, and you,' said Sarah-Ann. 'That was really entertaining.'
He seemed to have absolutely no interest in the girls as he brought his sweaty body a little too close for comfort.
In the dim lighting, I hadn't realised he was as old as the women made him out to be. And rather than question his orientation, I'd say the lighting made him believe I was one of the girls.
Besides, he was really quite drunk and just a bit too friendly.
