[h=2]Yishun condo reports 25 dengue cases[/h]

THE Estuary in Yishun might be the most infested with Aedes mosquitoes among condominiums in Singapore, after it reported an increase of 25 dengue cases from two in early May, reported Chinese evening daily Lianhe Wanbao.

Although The Estuary, located in Yishun Avenue 1, does not lie in the two zones in Bishan which the National Environment Agency's (NEA's) website says have the most dengue cases in Singapore, it tops the condominium group in terms of such cases, reported Wanbao.

The Clover by the Park condominium, located in Bishan Street 25, is second-highest in the group, having reported 12 dengue cases.

Ms Zhuang, a resident at The Estuary, said she would see a notice from the estate's management at the lift lobby almost every other day, reporting another new dengue case.

The management would also send e-mail messages to update residents on the estate's dengue situation, said the 37-year-old designer.

Following the outbreak of dengue in the estate, NEA has distributed to every home a bottle of insect repellent and packet of granular insecticide, said a spokesman.

NEA has also sent its officers once every two weeks to fumigate the condominium, as well as check for stagnant water or water in containers that are left unchanged.

NEA told My Paper yesterday that as of Monday, 31 mosquito breeding habitats have been found and destroyed in The Estuary.

Of these, 21 were found in residential premises, with three found in planter boxes within apartments, said NEA.

According to Ms Zhuang, many of The Estuary's 608 residents have converted a trough-like space in their balconies into planter boxes by covering it with woooden planks.

However, the covered space might collect water and breed mosquitoes, she said.

Fearing for her eight-year-old son's safety, Ms Zhuang said she made it a point to spray him
with mosquito repellent before he leaves for school and when he comes home every day.
She also shuts the windows every night and sleeps with the the air-conditioner on.
