A COMMITTEE on Safety in School Sports (CSSS) has been set up by the Education Ministry.
Chaired by MOE's Deputy Secretary (Services), Dr Mimi Choong May Ling, the committee will undertake a systemic review of safety practices and issues in the conduct of school sports.
The committee also comprises other individuals from diverse backgrounds, including parents, sports officials and professionals. Other members of the CSSS include Mr Oon Jin Teik, the Chief Executive Officer, Singapore Sports Council and Dr Quek Jin Jong, Principal Officer, Office of Director, National Institute of Education.
Said a spokesman for the Education Ministry on Wednesday: "The CSSS will survey the current guidelines and practices governing school sports, consider best practices in other countries and tap on views from sporting experts and the community."
The committee will also look into a range of areas, such as safety measures during PE and sports CCAs, appointment and training of teachers and coaches, safety awareness and culture, proper use and maintenance of sports equipment and protective gear, and medical coverage and support during activities. In particular,
Special attention will be paid to activities which may carry higher inherent risk of injuries, such as competitive contact sports.
The committee expects to submit its report and recommendations to the ministry in a few months' time.
This year's school sports season has been marked by several serious injuries and complaints of unsporting behaviour.
