Yam Ah Mee's son charged for drink driving in the US
SINGAPORE - According to a news report by Chinese daily Lianhe Wanbao, the eldest son of Chief Executive Director of the People's Association Yam Ah Mee was allegedly charged for drunk driving in Arizona, US.
Mr Yam famously shot to fame when his monotone voice and expressionless delivery of the General Elections 2011 results was broadcast on national TV.
Wanbao reported that his son Gabriel Yam was caught for drunk driving sometime in March or April while driving a sports car to a night club.
This happened around the same time China-born expatriate Ma Chi crashed his million dollar Ferrari into a taxi on May 12, which resulted in the deaths of three people.
However, the Chinese daily said in the younger Yam's case, apparently no one was hurt.
When the reporter attempted to contact Yam Ah Mee to enquire about the situation, he was told by Yam that the information is "still unclear" and that he is still in the midst of checking the details.
Yam then said he was at a meeting and ended the conversation.
In 2008, Gabriel made a public appearance when he accompanied his father to the 40th Anniversary celebrations of the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF).
The father and son duo, who are both RSAF airmen, gave their well wishes to RSAF, which subsequently appeared in print in a special commemorative publication.
It is said that in 2008, Gabriel was a pilot trainee in the RSAF. Wanbao's checks revealed that according to the Ministry of Defence website, the air force has a F-16 fighter detachment at the Luke Air Force Base, Arizona.
The report surmised that Gabriel is likely to have been posted there.
The elder Mr Yam was an Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) scholar, who went on to serve in the RSAF and eventually rose to be the Chief of Staff of the Air Staff.
Mr Yam then retired from the SAF as a Brigadier-General and entered the Civil Service, going on to take several senior level positions such as CEO and Dean of the Civil Service College, Deputy Secretary (Sea & Air) of the Ministry of Transport and chief executive of Land Transport Authority.
