The Xinjiang government awarded ten people including police officers, flight attendants
and passengers with 100,000 yuan for their brave efforts during the hijacking attempt. The
cabin crew will also share a 500,000 yuan reward. On June 29th, six people tried to hijack
Tianjin Airlines' Flight GS 7554 from Hotan to Urumqi City ten minutes after it took off.
Officials said a passenger named Liu Huijun sitting next to the cockpit in the first-class section,
was one of the first people to figure out that the hijacking was under way and shouted a
warning to other passengers.
Two policemen on the flight were seriously wounded while the lead attendant and seven
passengers received minor injuries when they fought the hijackers. The terrorists then tried to
escape, but were arrested after the plane landed back at the Hotan Airport. Investigation is still
underway.
