WP to merge Punggol East with Aljunied-Hougang Town Council

By Andrea Ong

The Workers' Party will be applying to merge the town council operations of Punggol East with its existing Aljunied-Hougang Town Council (AHTC), said Punggol East MP-elect Lee Li Lian and WP chairman Sylvia Lim on Thursday.
The merger will allow the new Aljunied-Hougang-Punggol East Town Council to benefit from economies of scale and cost savings, said Ms Lee and Ms Lim in a statement. The new town council will manage the wards of all seven WP MPs in all, making it one of the largest councils in Singapore.
They added that Ms Lee's ward will be able to draw on AHTC's experience and resources in town council management. For instance, the AHTC standing committees, helmed by the WP MPs, will be able to offer advice on issues like the calling and awarding of contracts, financial matters and estate maintenance.

WP has gone from running one of Singapore's smallest TC's to one of the largest in less than 2 years. Ooh, the irony. I like.

why opposition like wp likes to merge and combine.

while the other party likes to divide and split up into smaller pieces?

Pappies die die will not agree. If WP manage the mega town council well, imagine how many GRCs will be lost in 2016?

Since the proposal makes sense from a public interest point of view, I dont see how the Papees can fault it.

If WP keeps on doing things in a public and transparent manner, like it is doing now, the Papees will have to play ball. The Papees know that if they as much as try anything inimical or are up to their shenaningans again, the people of Singapore will deliver their approbation or opprobrium come 2016.

It will be fatal error to underestimate the people's intelligence or anger.

It is clear for all to see that grouping TCs mgmt together and running them will achieve economies of scale, but it's been decades since TCs and GRCs were designed, but so far, you dont hear of any Papee GRC merging for the constituents' interest, you dont hear of reduced TC fees, only fucking around with our conservancy fees collected and pocketing them via mechanisms called AIM.

I do not think there will be any objections. No real reason for that. But there is nothing to stop them from radically changing electoral boundaries just before the next GE. I suggest that is the way they will strike back. They will say that if boundaries of PAP wards can change significantly, so too the boundaries of opposition-held wards. Intellectually that is a fair enough argument.

It is also abundantly clear that the PAP anti-Opposition devices of GRCs and TCs are backfiring on themselves, and WP is proving that these devices can blow up in PAP's faces and can allow WP to scale up rapidly instead of becoming a millstone around the necks.

If enough voters are angry with them, they wont be able to gerrymandeer as well as before. If the PE BE is representative of the whole Singapore's voting pop, then how much can they do to split up anti-PAP support?

As Expected. Economies of Scale, they have learnt from school, unlike PAP
