The grass pitch at the new National Stadium needs time to grow......

SINGAPORE: The grass pitch at the new National Stadium needs time to grow but it should be ready for the SEA Games next year, said Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Lawrence Wong in response to criticism over the poor condition of the pitch.

The pitch appeared sandy when Italian team Juventus played a Singapore Selection side recently. Mr Wong said the consortium managing the stadium is doing its best to solve the problem.

He said: "They have experts whom they have employed to take care of the pitch, experts who have done the pitch in Wembley. So they know what needs to be done, and part of the solution is to make sure that we give enough time for the grass to grow. The grass needs some time to settle in and grow. In fact, when I asked one of the experts that they had employed from Wembley, he said that at the Wembley Stadium it took one year for the pitch to stabilise and settle in."Mr Wong made these comments as he launched a canoeing programme for people with disabilities at the MacRitchie Reservoir on Sunday morning (Aug 24). Run by volunteers, the aim of the programme is to make sports inclusive and accessible for all.

The programme is a partnership between the Singapore Canoe Federation (SCF), the SportCares Foundation and the Asian Women's Welfare Association. - CNA/ir

it's painful to see an idiot of a highly paid minister accepting and echoing what the experts tells him, and not ask the elementary question as to why the grass wasn't put to pasture when the foundation etc was being built for it to be in time for the football match - a role no different from that of a messenger boy.

jamban bee wah said it right like it happened in hv ... it's too late when you only look for the loo just when the poo appears.
so it's keepen orf der grassen for the time being

Why not, if I'm a hardcore Sinkie?

Hardcore Sinkies are so used to being fcuk left, right, top, bottom that they'll accept anything that is shoved down on them.

Ah Tiongs in Communist China will never accept such shitty explanation and won't hesitate to pour ridicule and scorn on the person who uttered it.

He is smoking his socks. When the the various. Golf courses were laid, they brought in experts from Australia and New Zealand to get it ready. No need one year. The Istana lawn was laid by a Kiwi.

This sounds like another Brompton affair where the Minister defended his staff without checking and later made to look like a fool.

Singapore's climate allows for rich flourishing growth so moisture and sun are not the issues.

Hire quality stadium groundsmen instead of making excuses lah.

Great leaders build trust with their followers by listening to them when they are not knowledgeable about the subject matter. Top Singaporean leaders are well known for that. An excellent display of leadership by Lawrence Wong.

at the new levi's stadium in santa clara for the niners' pre-season game opener, the grass was slippery and the whole field was replaced with new grass in less than a week for today's game. in sg's case they can always use sod instead of growing grass in the field. who the fuck does that these days except 3rd world cuntries. but i understand that sg is going natural and organic and homegrown. :D

Stinkies voted for such rubbish
Why complain now?

Stinkies should keep head down down and arseholes up high high for PAPs to tiew and to kan and to fuck as they laugh all the way to their banks, and back from thier banks

stinkies got what they voted for with their lack of balls and lack of brains

I think one year for the grass to grow is too slow, probably they cut cost and didn't buy enough grass patches to cover the entire field. And therefore more time is needed for the grass to grow and spread by themselves to fill up the space.

"listen" means accepting even a lame excuse, without using his own brain to think whether logical or not? i thought a better description is "blind faith"?

btw you a sam leong clone? why the same blind faith in the white scums?

granted that it may not be zoysia grass etc as in golf courses, the time taken (plus the delays in completion) would've been ample to even nuture the grass from seedlings to belukar-like bushy-ness....why, even the poop from the woman in hv would've supplied enuff nutrients for a small part of the stadium to flourish :p. seriously, anyone would think it was the first thing to consider when building a stadium.

apart from the chaps in sentosa golf club greens maint dept who are the best, any groundsman from src or scc would've done better :*:

grass species for greens vs. fairways vs. football fields are different, and they require different preparation, treatment, care, repair and growing times. zoysia is ok for the sg stadium, but i would recommend bermudagrass.

please give the well paid pappy some slack as he may have the last laugh with his fat pay. devil's in the details. for example, the brand new field at the newly built levi's stadium in santa clara had to be thoroughly gutted and replaced as expensive executives picked the wrong grass and had the field sodded loosely to meet start date. millions of $ wasted. the problem with using patches of sod to cover the field is that contact with bare soil is loose at least for a year. roots from sod will require around 2 years to penetrate into bare soil. the field may look covered with grass for football (american football is worse than soccer in terms of wear and tear on field) but patches of sod can come off with these very heavy but fast football players. ultimately, it's better to grow the grass on the field on the bare soil than placing mosaic of sods over it.

please be nice to our esteemed and very well informed pappies. thank you. :D

this prove that the more higher educated you are, Harvard type, the more crowd-mentality they have.

Find out is LHL fielding poly and ITE candidate for the next GE?

If it is then he is going to lower the MP salary further to justify his move. All this is done before he retire, the obscene salary scale is for himself.

His old fart already screwed older Singaporeans with the CPF@55 (a form of ISA lock up your CPF for another 15 years) before he die, leaving a trail of destruction.

I find the response to be totally acceptable. In fact it is commendable.

The first thing the pappies think of when building a stadium is having a mall right next to it. ;)

Oooh, as if we don't have enough malls already.

and a food court. because that's the first place sinkies will head to in all new venues.

No, it's probably because that's an income opportunity for the PAP's cronies in the F&B industry.

After going to so many malls islandwide, the trend should be quite obvious by now.

What other things to bring in more crowd then a shopping center ? You look at Terminal 4 and they are building a World class shopping mall in it with Capitol Land.

Yes 60.1% got no issues absolutely.
They voted and endorsed the pappies.

without a food court, even a 5-star venue such as mbs or ion is incomplete. it's the only city in the world where affordable f&b with a hawker feel is sacrosanct in any 5-star architectural consideration. :p

It is easy to spew rubbish from your keyboard.

Grass needs time to grow. Don't be naive!
