First flames, now thick black smoke rises from Jurong Island

Instead of the usual flames jetting from these columns on Jurong Island, STOMPer Cake spotted thick black smoke instead. She wonders why this pollution is allowed to continue.
Many STOMPers have reported seeing flames rising from the oil refinery columns on Jurong Island. These are caused by a practice known as 'flaring' and is believed to be a routine process.
In an email today (Mar 21) the concerned STOMPer wrote:
"It has been weeks since many STOMPers wrote in about red glowing lights from Jurong Island.
"I wonder why this hasn't caught the attention of the NEA.
"This morning, instead of the usual fire burning, thick dark smoke could be seen rising up in the direction of Portsmouth Road.
"I hope the relevant authorities could look into this, as this clearly causes air pollution, and residents are breathing the polluted air."
