WP plan could send economy into tailspin: Iswaran

The Workers Party's proposal to stop taking in additional foreign workers until 2020 is drastic and very risky, Second Minister for Trade and Industry S. Iswaran told Parliament on Thursday.


It will speed up business closures and cause Singaporeans to lose their jobs. The economy could spiral downward, and result in a loss of the country's reputation in the business and investor community.


Mr Iswaran added that the opposition party's idea to rely only on raising the resident labour force participation rate by 1 per cent every year is an "extreme freeze" scenario that Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean painted in his speech that opened the population white paper debate on Monday.


Turning to a driving analogy that WP secretary-general Low Thia Khiang first made during the 2011 General Election, Mr Iswaran said the WP proposes "to jam-brake", and put the economy in a tailspin.


The Government, however, is slowing down economic growth in a way that will "achieve a smooth landing".

We have relied on cheap foreign labour to grow the economy for more than 2 decades ...what has it gotten us? Growing unemployment for sinkees who are supposed to be in the prime of their career as they are displaced by cheaper foreigners.
The current plan gradually put more sinkees in the lower income and lower the standard of living of sinkees. It is time to end this madness of turning sinkapore over to foreigners. Signs of foreigners showing contempt for sinkees are everywhere ...yet the government supports the foreigners. Why are we defending a country that has little benefits for sinkees?

They are armed with professional Harvard qualifications and supposedly handpick for their minsterial quality and yet can't find new economy to fit our aging population.

Want to take short cuts using FTs and be paid $M obscene pays.

Put the economy in a tail spin? what about creating new economy for the aging population.

So far they searched round the world for new economy for the aging population and found nothing to copy. PAP copycat champion.

I certainly agree with your comment... Interacting with them has shown that as their numbers grow, and as our government propagate them as needed and welcomed talents, they have grown arrogant in our own country... Some FT tried to kick my car even when i had the right of way exiting from a condo...and gave me the finger... spoil my day, man. They expect us to accommodate them rather than they integrate...

the MIW's plan is liken to a drunken pilot clueless that he only have 1 of the 4 engine running. if temasek and GIC has been robust and well, there would b no need to ask for large tranche of cash extension last year. if these funds r the external wings of singapore economy, then we the passengers r supposed to believe that nothing is wrong. but the exaggeration fear only points to an imminent crash.

if and if indeed we r diving down, a faster engine will not lead to safer landing.
