The body of Victorian woman Tracey Ann O'Brien Maw has been found partly decomposed in what police are describing as an alleged murder.
According to police, the Shepparton woman's body was found by a farmer on the side of the road in Vunavutu village, on the island of Vita Levu in Fiji.
Maw was reportedly beaten so severely that her brother, Rodney, could only identify her body by a distinctive tattoo.
Reports suggest Maw had travelled to Fiji to reconcile a relationship with a local man she had been dating.
Police Commissioner BJJ Groenewald said the case has been classified as an alleged murder and a cremation was required “due to the extreme stage of putrefaction of the victim’s body”.
Consular assistance is being provided to Ms Maw's family, according to a statement from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
