SINGAPORE: A woman who lied about having a husband working for the Interpol was on Wednesday jailed 11 months for cheating three victims a total of S$24,600.
56-year-old Kalimah Osman had told her 60-year-old friend that her imaginary husband was taking care of a government minister.
Kalimah claimed that her so-called husband was given eight OCBC shares by the man under his care.
The unemployed woman then claimed that seven of the eight shares were given to family members, and she offered the remaining share to her friend for S$1,000.
Kalimah already owed the victim S$150, so the victim topped up S$850 for the supposed investment.
Kalimah also lied to a second victim, a 32-year-old woman.
She claimed she could help the victim buy branded bags at a discount.
The second victim handed Kalimah S$1,000, thinking that it was a deposit to buy a Louis Vuitton and a Chanel bag.
Kalimah also admitted to cheating the second victim's mother by lying she was getting her imaginary husband to buy gold at a discounted rate.
The offences were committed between January and May this year.
The prosecution proceeded on five of the 16 charges.
In mitigation, the defence lawyer said Kalimah could not find a permanent job, having only completed Secondary Two.
The lawyer said his client had been unemployed for 10 years, and thus resorted to cheating.
But the district judge noted that the offences involved three victims over a period of six months.
Kalimah could have been jailed up to 10 years and fined on each count. - CNA/nd
