AN ANAESTHETIST arrived late for a woman's Caesarean operation and without speaking to her or assessing her, put her under general anaesthesia (GA).

English tutor Joanne Tong, then 34, was giving birth to her sixth child in October 2006. When she woke up, she felt pain not only from the surgical wound but also in her neck and upper back.

The pain has worsened over the past 41/2 years, and Madam Tong is still undergoing physiotherapy and takes at least 20 pills a day for pain and to treat her emotional condition.

The High Court heard this yesterday, at the opening of a 19-day trial into the medical negligence suit.

Madam Tong, now 39, has sued Dr Gordon Yau for inflicting injury on her during the GA procedure.

She is seeking $2.6 million: $400,000 for expenses incurred, $1.2 million for future expenses, and $1 million for loss of future income.
