Iskandar Malaysia exceeds expectation

JOHOR BARU: Iskandar Malaysia is exceeding expectations as a dynamic growth corridor by attracting huge investments in various sectors.

The latest include seven projects involving investments totalling about RM46bil.

Among them are the creation of a motorsports city, nanotechnology-based industries, mixed development areas, development of prime water front property, a trade and exhibition centre, communications and ICT infrastructure and a global innovation centre.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak witnessed the signing of the deals during the World Islamic Economic Forum (WIEF) at the Persada Convention Centre and the Danga Bay Convention Centre yesterday.

The rising interest in Iskandar, launched in 2006, is expected to thrust the corridor's growth beyond the RM100bil mark for investments by the end of the year.

When asked about the total achieved so far, Najib, who is also Finance Minister, said: “The figures look very encouraging and I will be make a special announcement on Dec 11.”

He said many of the WIEF delegates were impressed with what they saw and were excited when taken on a helicopter tour of the area.

“Iskandar is creating a lot of interest and excitement. This can be seen through the new trends, including the fact that many Singaporeans are now opting to stay here and travel to Singapore for work.

“There are also Singaporean students who travel here daily to attend Malborough College. This has never happened before,” he said after the forum.

He said the attractions within Iskandar including Legoland Malaysia and Johor Premium Outlets contribute to its image as a vibrant and exciting region.

After witnessing the signing of the sales and purchase agreement for the 22ha waterfront land in Danga Bay between China's Country Garden Holdings Co Ltd and Iskandar Waterfront Holdings Sdn Bhd, Najib said due credit should be given to the Barisan Nasional Government for its vision in launching Iskandar Malaysia.

He said the RM1bil land purchase by Country Garden, the biggest investment by any investor from China from one of Forbes list of 50 top companies in Asia, reflected deep confidence in the dynamism of Malaysia and Johor.

He said investors also noted that Johor was much bigger than Iskandar, citing the Pengerang Oil and Gas developments, the Desaru mega tourism and resort projects.

According to the Iskandar Regional Development Authority, the corridor had received RM99.79bil cumulative committed investments in various sectors, with RM42bil or 43% realised as of September this year.

Of the total, 63% were from domestic investors.

Iskandar Malaysia is located in south Johor covering 2,217 sq km three times bigger than Singapore and two times the size of Hong Kong.

Singapore tycoon, partners to build RM3b race track in Johor

December 01, 2012

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 1 — Singaporean billionaire Peter Lim is bidding to build a RM3 billion race circuit in Iskandar, Johor with the Johor royal family and state asset manager Khazanah Nasional Berhad, the Straits Times reported today.

The Singapore daily reported that the project, called Motorsports City, is expected to be completed by 2015 or 2016 in Malaysia’s ambitious southern corridor that provides high-end housing and entertainment popular with Singaporeans.

It quoted sources as saying the race track’s 100-hectare site is located 10 to 15 minutes away from Tuas’ Second Link in the southern state, at the left of a rest stop after the Malaysian checkpoint.

The project will be an integrated facility encompassing a track certified by world motor-racing body FIA, and can hold GT, go-kart and motorcycle races.

Celebrated designers Hermann Tilke and Clive Bowen have been named as those who might design the 4km to 4.5km race track, which will feature, among others, a 1.2km to 1.5km stretch where vehicles can speed up to 300km/h.

Besides the circuit, the project will also contain resort homes, a car museum, an advanced driving school, workshops, a warehouse and a go-kart factory.

A bonded area will be available where well-off car enthusiasts can store their tax-free cars, including left-hand-drive models.

Those who don’t prefer to drive can also enjoy an air-conditioned circuit for radio-controlled cars, and a room with top-notch simulators.

When it is open, car manufacturers will be able to test-drive their vehicles, conduct product training for employees, and hold launches for their customers in the facility.

Motorsports City will house the third major race track in Malaysia after the Sepang International Circuit, which holds the Malaysia Grand Prix Formula One and MotoGP races, and the Pasir Gudang track nearby.

Lim, 59, is a well-known car enthusiast, with a garage of exotic cars which he rarely gets to drive in his native Singapore. He was recently approached for a similar project in Singapore called Changi Motorsports Hub on a 41ha three-year leasehold site nearby the Singapore Airshow grounds, which is currently stalled.

In August, Lim had acquired a stake in British race car manufacturer McLaren Automotive and had taken a spot on the board of directors along with Ron Dennis, Mansour Ojjeh and the Bahrain Mumtalakat Holding Co.

The businessman, named the eighth richest man in Singapore by Forbes, had recently invested in a multibillion-dollar medical hub, also located in Johor’s Iskandar.

It will take at least 20 year to overtake KL.
Does ShenZhen China overtake Shanghai??? No right.

Johor probably overtaken KL in terms of sinkees spending already. If more sinkee chinks move to Johor in the next 10 years which will happen, Johor might surpass KL.

Iskandar Malaysia well on the way to be very vibrant and exciting region, says Najib

2012-12-04 17:49

JOHOR BAHARU, Dec 4 (Bernama) -- Iskandar Malaysia's growth since its inception six years ago has exceeded expectations and the economic corridor is well on its way to be a very vibrant and exciting region, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said today.

Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the Eight World Islamic Economic Forum (WIEF) here, he said guests attending the forum were very impressed with Iskandar Malaysia's rapid development.

"People are very impressed on what they see on the ground (Iskandar Malaysia). We took some of them on a helicopter tour and (they said) Iskandar Malaysia has exceeded its expectations.

With attractions like the Puteri Harbour Family Theme Park, Johor Premium Outlet and Legoland Malaysia, Iskandar Malaysia is well on the road to achieve its objective," said Najib, who is also Finance Minister.

The prime minister said there were several interesting developments at Iskandar Malaysia that never happened before.

"For example, more and more Singaporeans now opted to live in Johor now and commute daily from to the republic.

"Few busloads of students commute daily from the republic to attend school at the Marlborough College in Nusajaya.

"Basically, as things develop between the two countries, we see Singapore continues as a hub for commercial and financial development, whereas southern Johor (Iskandar Malaysia areas), will be an area of high quality living for them (Singaporeans).

"This will be a win-win situation. Johor will benefit from the enormous influx of people, talents as well as capital inflows. It will be good for the future of Johor," he said.

Asked if today's exchange of documents for six partnerships in Iskandar Malaysia with a total estimated value of RM28 billion meant the total investment in the economic corridor has exceeded the RM100 billion mark.

Najib said there will be a special occasion held Dec 11 for him to announce the latest figures on Iskandar Malaysia's total cumulative investments.

"The figures look very encouraging but I reserve my announcement. There will be a special function on Dec 11 exclusive on Iskandar Malaysia," he said.

Among the agreements signed today were between Sunway City Sdn Bhd and Iskandar Asset Sdn Bhd to develop Sungai Pendas, near Medini, with a potential gross development value of RM12 billion.

Others are a memorandum of understanding between UEM Land Bhd and Chinamall Holdings Private Ltd to develop China Mall, a trade and exhibition centre in Nusajaya.

UEM Land, Iskandar Investment Bhd and Telekom Malaysia Bhd also signed an agreement to provide communications and ICT infrastructures to realise the Smart and Connected Nusajaya aspirations.

UEM Land, the master developer of Nusajaya, also signed a joint-venture agreement with Fastrack Autosport Pte Ltd, controlled by Singapore billionaire Peter Lim, to develop a RM3.5 billion Motorsport City in Gerbang Nusajaya.

Ever since moving to JB i have noticed that more and more sg plates crossing the causeway on a daily basis. Even in the less peak periods of between 1pm to 5 pm. Soon the causeway will be insufficient to handle the daily loads of traffic. A ferry service will be good for commuters who take public transport if they are wise to implement one. But unfortunately anything that will benefit sinkees living abroad wont be good for Pappies.

jb can overtake kl oni wif plenty of sinkie moni ...

Puteri Harbour will have such a service soon at their CIQ.

And Singapore needs foreign trash to build up their economy? Imagine those Ah Tiongs, Pinoys, Ah Nehs, Bangalas, Myanmars, Siam, Javans and Angmos leave. Singapore will just collapse. Those Singaporeans are so useless.

The truth hurts huh?

i like what you say.. upz you.

Funny leh. I am also looking at the same figure - 20 years.

I think it is not right just to say 20 years without offering any explanation. What is the similarity using Shenzhen and Shanghai as a yardstick? Johor has the strength of Singapore to depend on with a population combine with Singapore that stands at about 7 million which is about the same as Greater KL (less than 7 million).

Population of Shenzhen is half that of Shanghai.

Sinkeesgot more spending power than the m&ds up in KL. Plus all the migrant bums from muslims cuntries in KL all no money type. Peesai will loose alot of business to Jb in the coming years. Expect pappies to find ways in squeezing more money out of sinkees whom cross the causeway daily.

Puteri Harbour will have such a service soon at their CIQ.

Yes i read about it somewhere. But for everyday causeway crosses, abit troublesome to go all the way to puteri harbour. It makes no sense. Than also how much is a ticket on the ferry? In Perth there is a ferry service that crosses the swan river to the other side. It is cheap and you can use ur transit card to buy the ticket. Even though there are train services and buses that goes to that part of perth, they still have the ferry service just walking distance to esplanade train station in perth.
If there is a ferry terminal somewhere in woodlands, thousands can avoid the traffic jams daily to cross the causeway. But like I said, pappies wont go for it.

Unfortunately Singapore and Malaysia were not made up of only one race, otherwise Singapore would be Malaysia's capital instead of KL.
