The Falklands War was fought from 2 April to 14 June 1982 after Argentina invaded the British overseas territories in the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. Argentina had 649 soldiers killed, more than 1,000 wounded and around 11,000 taken prisoner. The UK lost 255 military personnel and 775 were wounded. The 1982 invasion was ordered by a desperate military govt seeking to distract their people from a crumbling economy. After restoring democracy in 1983, Argentine leaders realise that armed conflict would trigger economic sanctions and destroy trade ties with Western economies. Argentina's military leaders used state-controlled media to build up the morale of their conscripted soldiers. Fearing that their soldiers would surrender when the British Army's Gurkhas attacked, the officers told their troops that bloodthirsty Gurkha cannibals took no prisoners and ate their enemies after killing them. The propaganda backfired, breaking Argentine morale; instead of inspiring the soldiers not to surrender, the Gurkhas' terrifying reputation caused panic, with Argentine soldiers abandoning their posts as they were too frightened of the "cannibals".
