His father say give up on the problem for next generation of leaders. But if PM Lee also give up means ...game over...Singaporeans will get replaced. Now Singapore is not just having low fertility rate but the LOWEST fertility rate in the world. To be lowest at something means something special and unique about our living conditions and environment. Most developed countries have managed to reverse the tide even japan now has the highest TFR of last 16 years

http://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/20...ertility-rate-logs-16-year-high-hitting-1-41/

Remember yrs ago, fertility rate in Singapore was far higher than japan so what cause the sharp plunge ? Now fertility rate in Japan is 16% higher than Singapore and rising yr after yr.

Singapore’s experience is no different from that of these countries. Our birth rates have been steadily declining. The fertility rate of the Chinese segment of our population is the lowest, 1.08 (2011), with the rate for Indians 1.09 and for Malays 1.64. In other words, the size of each successive generation of Chinese Singaporeans will halve in the next 18 to 20 years.

The pap until today blame Singaporeans for putting career first before marriage and children to cause this low fertility problem.....basically the pap refuse to recognise the true nature of the problem and put the blame on Singaporeans.

Personally I am not married Why is this so? I have no career to speak of so what is the reason. Basically, I observe my friends having children all have numerous problems. Because of these problems their life is very tough. In Singapore the quality of life is already very poor due to high stress, high cost of living, high indebtedness, overcrowding and job insecurity. Having children for many people means further deterioration in quality of life outweigh the joy of having children. I see most of my friends especially those whose income is average or below average suffering badly once they have children - medical bills pile up, baby sick sometimes need specialist very costly. Even take but push stroller into crowded bus have to fold up bring down...older children need high expenses like tuition, etc. If single lose job not so stress because no one else to support but if have family can be devastating... and now in singapore , hire and fire style of businesses is now common. Many pple once they have to support family with children they have insufficient to retire ...worst are those with old parents to support in addition to children.unless super high pay definitely at some point end up going to loan shark for help....

PM Lee's rally is really very disappointing as he did not introduce any concrete measures to solve this problem. Without a solution here the pap will always lean towards importing more foreigners using low fertility as an excuse This is dangerous because such approaches produce an negative feedback loop that will sink us further ...more foreigners=more stress= more overcrowding= higher cost of living= fewer babies=more foreigners. It is a Singaporean core destructive destructive loop that pap has entered and unless Singapore breaks out of it Singapore will be dominated by foreigners.

I is disappointing that pm Lee avoided this important topic that threatens us and puts us on a path of increasing dominance by foreigners

If you see the situation out there.. and am at ground level with the ordinary folk, and not those who sit in "ivory towers".. I bet you would also think very very hard if you want your children to come into this country, where everything is going to the foreigners.

Once, you could retire at age 55, and your children would have jobs and look after you.

Now.. at 65, you would still have to slog.. and if nobody wants to employ you for your experience in whatever field your career was in.. you end up driving a taxi.. at best.. at worst.. you clean tables.. or be a security guard.

Your children might not be able to even support themselves.. and once they reach 40, they would be damn lucky if they still have a job that pays them relatively well.. unless that goes to the foreigners too.

And school?? Let's face it... who the @#$%^&& gave the government permission to grant so many foreign students scholarships to come to SG to study for free.. and after graduation from a local Uni.. get a job.. a paying job, mind you!!!

Would you want your kids to come into such an environment where the odds are semmingly stacked against them??

I wouldn't!

You are a failure in Singapore.

Low fertility rate is universal. Nothing uniquely Singapore.

Stop meddling with nature and with eugenics, concentrate on the socio-economic problems....

thank you kenneth for not jumping in and accusing me of being a liar.

here is the proof. TFR for.Japan.is.1.39:

http://www.indexmundi.com/japan/total_fertility_rate.html

TFR for Singapore is 1.2:
http://www.indexmundi.com/singapore/total_fertility_rate.html

this means on average each japanese woman produce 0.19 babies more...this is 16%

Wow, confirm u are a liar by using data not from Singapore to mislead peoples here, and proven that u are a Malaysian.

http://news.xin.msn.com/en/singapore/singapores-total-fertility-rate-sees-slight-improvement-1

Singapore has welcomed 33,205 new babies in 2012 bringing the country's total fertility rate or TFR to 1.29.

Revealing this in Parliament today during the Committee of Supply debate, Minister in the Prime Minister's Office, Grace Fu says the 2012 TFR is a slight improvement from 2011 where there were 30,946 new babies born to Singapore citizens.

The TFR in 2011 was 1.20.

Replying to several points raised by MPs during the debate, Ms Fu says the government has set aside an annual budget of 2.3 billion dollars for marriage and parenthood measures.

And as part of it, further improvements are being made to the pre-school sector and Education and Social and Family Development Ministries will provide further details of these initiatives.

the data is 2011.compare.with 2011 numbers
for comparison.

if you want to.compare 2012.numbers singapore fertility is.still lower however you.must be cautious ...in 2012 the govt had a slew.of.incentives to.cause a brief spike in fertility, history shows that this.is.short lived and.will.just fade back.to trend
in coming yrs when the effects fade

There is no problems with low fertility,,all countries go through that and resources on this earth is finite,,we cannot support soo many people..its only PAP that is making a fuss out of it,,our economic growth is underpin by a larger population vs land area that is why spore is going downhill not cos its fertility is down.
