Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) has today (29th Feb), issued a public apology to Robin Yang Kai Heng, one of the editors of now-defunct The Real Singapore (TRS) website, for defaming him in an article published on The New Paper (TNP) on 4th March 2015.

In the article titled “They own posh unit”, TNP had relied on the account of a supposed fellow student named “Joshua Chern” and insinuated that Robin Yang was “dishonest” and “conducts his business dealings in a manner that lacks probity”.

Joshua Chern had claimed that Robin Yang had induced his sister into investing in “boboshooter”, a business selling game consoles and gaming accessories. However, after she invested A$2,000 (S$2,130), Robin Yang allegedly started to avoid her after a “falling out”.

What TNP had published:

Following an alleged business dispute with Mr Yang, Mr Chern hired a private investigator to track him down.

He said: “My sister met Robin in Brisbane and then he asked her to invest in ‘boboshooter’, a business selling game consoles and other gaming accessories.

“He took A$2,000 (S$2,130) from her and promised her a share in the business and that he would use the money to develop and grow the business.”

But they had a falling out and Mr Chern claimed Mr Yang began avoiding them. That was when they hired the investigator.

Mr Chern said Mr Yang had bragged about his knowledge of online business and his involvement with TRS.

He said in an e-mail: “Sometime in June 2013, Robin approached us to go into online business with him.

“He had operated online businesses previously and he seemed to know his stuff.

“Moreover, he was already telling Singaporean students that he was earning thousands a month from TRS.

“We thought he was a smart businessman.”

Both Robin Yang and his fiancee Ai Takagi (who is also an editor with TRS) have stated that they have no knowledge of the student claimed by TNP and the story was “completely unfounded and was deliberately fabricated to tarnish his (Robin Yang) reputation”.

Other than a public apology, SPH also reportedly paid an undisclosed sum in compensation to Robin Yang.

Out-of-court settlement with SPH

Interesting to note, Robin Yang and his fiancee Ai Takagi had only recently reached an out-of-court settlement with SPH over a copyright infringement claim filed by SPH.

The settlement, which was confirmed by SPH in a statement issued on 13th January 2016, includes the payment of an undisclosed sum to SPH and the publication of an open apology by Ms Takagi on the print edition of The Straits Times.

Robin Yang and Ai Takagi

On trial for 7 charges under Sedition Act

Robin Yang and Ai Takagi are currently facing 7 charges under the Sedition Act. The case has been adjourned to a later date.

Takagi Ramen Shop

Since the forced closure of TRS, the duo now manage a popular Japanese Ramen chain shop selling Japanese noodles.

Two of the shops are located at National University of Singapore’ (NUS) food courts while a recently opened shop is located at a coffee shop facing the MRT station in Ang Mo Kio central.

The two shops at NUS are located in the canteens of Prince George’s Park Residences and the university’s Bukit Timah Campus, near the Singapore Botanic Gardens.

TRE understands that business has been good which prompted the opening of the third shop in Ang Mo Kio.
