Why foreign kids outperform local kids: MM Lee

New immigrants are more highly educated, and their children will provide stiff competition to local students.

Some foreign students may be outperforming local kids in examinations such as the O levels, but that is not the reason to stop welcoming foreign talent, said Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew, at the 25th anniversary of the S'pore federation of Chinese Clan associations (SFCCA).

For the sake of national interest, Singapore must continue to welcome new immigrants to its shores.

Speaking in a mix of Mandarin and English, MM Lee offered his thoughts on why there are visibly more foreigners excelling in this year's O-level examinations.

He said new immigrants entering Singapore are more highly educated, and therefore these graduates will produce intelligent children that will offer more competition to local students.

But MM Lee also added that there are "many, ordinary immigrants".

really don't know why we need to go through the stress with singapore education system. students, teachers and parents are all stressed and we see more and more foreign raised kids top the exams.

so garmen conveniently assumed that the education system they designed is the best (whatever they do, can-never-be-wrong attitude), and conveniently conclude that foreign parents raised smarter kids ??

u still dun gets it ah? our education system is designed to make sure majority of the sinkies stop at diploma level, so that they are neither here nor there to oppose the govt. and most sinkies will have no other choice but to sweat for govt. With the lousy diploma, cannot even find a good job in other foreign countries, so lan lan have to stay here and serve PAP

Why don't the Govt look from the other side of the coin? I mean a kid gets his/her 1st education from his/her parents. And their parents got their education from the schools from their country of origin. Hence can I assume that the education is so screw up that they can't teach their offsprings to be good students unlike parents that have been educated overseas?

You raised a very good point. Does this mean that Singapore education is flawed? Maybe someone should point this out to him instead. In a way is he also saying that Singaporean are of low IQ and intelligence? You are not too far off the mark. The talented kids are identified at a very young age & streamed towards all those special programs.

If you child is not one of those talented, the gov't doesn't care & what you do is your business

I disagree,most of our citizens disagree,even former top civil servant Ngiam T D disagreed stronly.

They always say we are 1st world country and has world class education system. Then now suddenly, our 1st world education system cannot even beat those children from the 3rd world education system? Why har?

Due to the high cost of living and low salary, both Sinkie parents have to work and so no time to teach their own children. If you notice, most of the FT wife do not work and able to provide more loving care to their children. Well love children = children with less emotional problem = do well in school?

MIW should understand by now that whatever they say will and can be used against them as they had been the authority for too long. It is so easy to blame everything on them. Every single thing that screws up is their fault as they started the country from as far as many of us can relate to. The good thing in the country are taken for granted and expected due to the fact that their salary is the highest in the world.
